I got an awsome tomini bristletooth tang last fri. He was beatin up by a pb tang. I have him in qt to keep a watch on him. All of a sudden he has a growth near his tail fin. It has grown 3x bigger since yesterday. Here is a pic. Is it a parasite? Looks like it has antennae on the cream colored spot. Guess when it rains it poors.

What are you using for filtration in your QT? Looks like a parasite or fungus

I am running a skimmer. I was going to take it down to hypo, but have not treated with anything as of yet. Would hypo help @ this point?
-
It will likely be dead in a few days from ammonia posining. Better get some live rock in there in a hurry. Skimmer won't work in hypo but is good for oxgenating the water.
-
ammonia is @ 0. I can thro some rock in there if that would help tho.
-
Trites & trates both are high tho. I put some live rock in there. I am going to prepare water for a water change now.
-
Try some Melafix....it has worked wonders for me, also formalin is a good product.
-
What ever it was fell off all of a sudden. You can see his boney fin now. Maybe it was just crud that was caught on that fin. He was beat up pretty bad. His fins have been coming back fast. This is an awsome fish & I just dont want to loose it.
-
I know what you mean. I have recently taken a liking to the Tomini's myself.
Hope he makes it through.
-
Okay so you do have filtration "live rock" that is good. If you have nitrites you are running a cycle. Consider adding prime or amquel
-
So once I get the trate & trites down Would it be safe to start bring the tank down to hypo slowly?
-
Rofl tominis are evil! Where did you get him, just curious... Lol
You can go straight to hypo so long as your sg doesnt fall below .009...
I go 2 step... .025 to .018 for 20- 40 min then .018 to .009... If you run too much below .009 too fast the cells in the gills will implode from osmosis as their salt count is higher than the surronding water and will rapidly leave the cell to try to equalize the salt count between the two bodies.... Same principles of brining a turkey but reversed lol

Cody.... You don't recognize your old friend? This was your guy... He was in the school tank and was doing awesome. I brought him home and my Powder Brown DID NOT like him. That is how he got beat up.
-
When you go to hypo most everything on your live rock dies causing a ammonia spike killing fish or anything else in tank. Put the live rock in hypo by itself let it cycle (takes about 3 - 7 days) you will know when done by testing. Then you can add fish. A fish can go from full salt to hypo immediately just not the other direction. Takes a week to safety bring them back up or cellular explosion like Cody said.

Evil? Why you say evil? Pb tangs are evil. This guy is awsome. Heis by far my favorite fish. I think he wil do great in my tank once I put him in there. Just after all he has been thru I don't want to take any chances with him.
-
Lol todd I did recognize him thats why I asked I wont forget that fish rofl...
Great colors mean azz attitude thougg he fought everything I put in that 80
I dont think he will ever die joe he is a mean fish i am pretty sure I saw him drinking jim beam out of a broken mason jar

I think a little pb has scared him straight. He still has the broken mason jar, but he is drinking sweet tea instead of JB.
