Title: My 125 Gallon LED Reef Peninsula tank build
Post by: mccorry on January 12, 2013, 11:47:20
Well, I ran out of space in my existing tank and decided to go bigger.  The wife and I have decided to install a 125 gallon tank in our front living room.  Her stipulations is that it must be a clean installation and quiet.

I've decided to build my own LED fixture for this tank and received the parts this week.....  which consist of:

1 - 72" Makers LED heat sink
5 - 75 /700 mA Invetronics dimmable drivers
1 - DIM 4 Sunrise / Sunset controller
27 - 3UP LED stars (containing 1x CREE XT-E Warm (4500K) 3W LED and 2x CREE XT-E 3W Royal Blue (455 nm) LED's each)
3 - Royal Blue (455 nm) CREE XT-E 3W LED's (Moonlights)
12 - Ocean Coral White LED's (containing 1x 3W Deep red LED, 1x 3W Teal LED, and 1x 3W Green LED)
12 - True Violet (405 nm) 3W LED's
12 - Pure Violet (430 nm) 3W LED's
1 - 4-pot dimmer for individual color control

Other equipment I've picked up include CPR 1000 GPM overflow, Danner Mag-12 Return Pump, and Digital Aquatics ReefKeeper Elite with extra PC4 modules.

I'm going to try and document the build of the fixture and tank in this thread in hopes that you all get some enjoyment out of it and so that I might learn a few pointers from you all, along the way...

So... here we go.... :)

Waiting for some D-Sub HD15 straight through cables to show up to hook up the power board to the fixture. Still need to mount and wire up the two fans and 4 POT dimmers.

How much $ do you have in a fixture like that?

About $1,400 including heat sink, drivers, LED's, controller, dimmer box and POT's.  Sounds like a lot until you compare it to a commercial fixture which would be 2-3 times as much.

Thank you.    ^-^

Moved the stand into position yesterday and mounted the driver board and some of the new ReefKeeper Elite modules.
Also picked up two new Ehiem Jager 250W heaters and a AquaEuroUSA 135 skimmer.

I'll try to get some updated pictures soon.

Got around to installing the bubble trap baffles in the sump....

Baffles are in....

Looks really good, quality build. On your sump is your first baffle to tall and the last one in your return pump section to low?
Title: Re: My 125 Gallon LED Reef Peninsula tank build
Post by: mccorry on February 06, 2013, 21:31:25
The first one is set for 16" to keep my heaters submerged....
I plant to have live rock/refugium between the skimmer and return pump... that is the reason for the short barrier.... to keep the stuff from getting pulled into my pump.
Title: Re: My 125 Gallon LED Reef Peninsula tank build
Post by: lazylivin on February 06, 2013, 21:58:26
On the first baffle the water will travel to the top of weir and come crashing down to the water level in the next weir. It may be noisy, cause salt creep and could cause what they are for eliminating, bubbles which will be forced due to velocity into the sump area. Due to the low height on the last baffle the pump will be able to pull all the water that is above it from the sump section into the tank. There is risk that if you have a clog in your hose from the tank to the sump it will overflow the tank. If the baffle was the same height as the water level in the sump it could only pull the water that is in it's chamber. Just some things to think about.

One other point to consider, is that your skimmer will need to be in a constant water depth.   Where it sits right now, the water will only be as stable as you are topping off your water.

Post by: lazylivin on February 06, 2013, 22:48:08
If splashing, bubbles, saltcreep becomes an issue for you, you can without removing anything, carefully cut using a hole saw a few holes at the height you want in the first baffle. Or using a dremel cut about a 1/4" slot for the water to come through.

Consider pulling and replacing that last baffle (the one next to your return pump) with another one  that is the same height as the one directly opposite to it. Also give yourself another 3"width for your pump/evaporation level. 3 reasons, 1> This will solve your issue that Paul is pointing out by keeping the skimmer at the same water level. 2> The pump is in such a small chamber you will have a hard time keeping your water at the right level. It won't evaporate much water before your pump will begin sucking air. 3> If you ever want to add a ATO it will need to go in the chamber the pump is in so you will need the room.

I've re-configured the sump based on the input from you all.  I really appreciate it.

From the return end it is configured as such:

1.) First baffle is existing.  I do understand that I might want to lower it or modify with slots down the road... but for now, I've left it at 16" high.
2.) Second baffle is existing.  This is the bubble trap to force the water down underneath it.
3.) I've changed the third baffle to a 15" high setup with a slight slope away.  I did this to raise the water level in the bubble trap as suggested and to allow the water flowing over the 3rd baffle to flow down the baffle instead of falling off of it and potentially splashing / making noise.  The slope is only 6% or so as to not lose too much room in the sump floor.
4.) I've added a fourth baffle at 7" tall just past the protein skimmer.  This will keep the level at the skimmer at a constant 7" during operation.  It might be a little higher based on top off.. but not much.
5.) The fifth baffle has been left as is for now.  I plan on modifying with some perforated holes to lower the possibility of it sucking air.  Still need to do some additional testing / thinking on this one

Hey...  finally got the sump re-configured.  Ended up ripping all of it out and going with thicker 0.22" Acrylic due to the thin stuff bowing under the water pressure.
Much better now.

Here are some pictures....

Not much to update at this point....

Currently running a dedicated circuit / GFCI for the tank from the breaker box.

I continue to have issues with my sunset/sunrise controller.  They thought it was a capacitor, but I just replaced it last night and it still isn't working correctly.
Going to box it up and send the board to CA for the manufacturer to repair.....

Oh well....

Nice clean work.....I really like this.   The only portion that makes me nervous is how you have a return very very low in the tank which makes you rely on that check valve.  I know I have a BUNCH of stuff that lives in my plumbing, snails, sponges, not to mention the slimy stuff that sticks to the walls.  I would be afraid that check valve isn't going to work properly and you could siphon your tank out onto the floor.  Something to keep your eye on.......as it would make me very nervous.

I see he has a return up towards the top of the tank also, wouldn't that break the siphon before he drained the whole tank?

Well... fired everything up last night and the overflow piping is NOISY!  Argh.  I've got Gurgle busters on the overflow box and it's pretty quiet... but the PVC return is loud.
Looks like I'm going to have to ditch all that hard work and switch it out to two 1" flexible PVC return hoses to get rid of the bends...

Oh well.

Any other ideas?

Weird. If the pvc is full of water and no air it should be quite.  Is it the pump its self making noice?

Just like any pipe that has pressure in it should quite.

This is the drain line from the overflow box to the sump.....

The return line from the pump to the tank is perfectly quiet.

Is it pump vibration through the PVC?

It is not the pump or return line.  It is from the Overflow box drain line to the sump.

You should vent that pipe at the sump.

If a Maggie muffler will fit in your overflow box that silence it. I got my at premium aquatics and their ups ground service arrives next day.

As I stated... I've already installed gurgle busters in The overflow.  There are two 1" lines coming out of the overflow, combining to.one 1.25".line.

Oh does it like do a flushing noise every now and then in to the sump. Sorry trying to understand. If so may be too many 90s going to the sump causing if to build a siphon and then flow faster than your return gph so it then breaks the siphon causing it to suck lots of air in and cause gurgling in the sump.    You can try flex pipe to help or you can try some 45s if you can make it work to get to your sump.

Yeah .... sounds like constant swishing in the piping.... think I've got too many turns...

Yeah that is deffently it. You need to make as little as possible. Flex would be the easyiest way to do that.

A gurgle buster isn't a maggie muffler and neither will achieve complete silence. Regardless of how many 90's or 45's it won't make any less or more noise. Noise comes from air being sucked into the pipe with the water. To remove the noise you need to remove the air. This can be a challenge however complete silence can be achieved. I had same issue, if interested take a look at my build thread and you can see how I dealt with it. My display tank is now completely silent and it is impossible to hear the slightest bit of noise even if you had your ear inches from the overflow. If you were closer I would give you hand because I know how annoying the noise can be.

Flex pipe or PVC can amplify noise well. Clear vinyl tubing is easy to work with and dampens noise much better.

I think you have two overflow pipes. If yes you can raise one up higher than the other, say an inch or two by adding a coupling for about $1. Put a gate valve on the lower run to run full siphon by closing the valve (about 5$) (The gate valve needs to be close to the end where it is entering the sump. THen let it trickle over the second one that is a bit taller. Adjust the gate valve so it is just barely dripping over it. The only issue is you would not be able to go from two to one pipe like you have now. It would be a pain to change dead quiet if your noise is coming from air being sucked into the pipes. Do you have an updated shot of the pic below with your piping you added to the overflow box.

I've got a 1.25" gate valve on order.  I'm going to install it in the horizontal 1.25" pipe (below the one you have x'ed) that goes around back of the stand.

If I can get it to work OK, I plan on adding an additional bulkhead to the side of the overflow box, up high, and running a separate line all the way to the sump.  This would be my safetly overflow line.

Little hiccup with the white LED's.  Had a bad solder joint on one of the dimmer controls that caused the whites to only come on about 40%.
I didn't notice since I've not been home during the day (white cycle).

My bird of paradise and metallic green Pocillopora both lost tissue.  I've got them back up in my 55 gal reef tank to try and heal up.
Everything else is doing great.  All the fish made it over to the new tank alright and all the rest of the corals seem to be doing OK.
