Title: Need some ideas
Post by: bkvreef on September 01, 2013, 23:52:20
I now have my 220 (72 x 24 x 30) tank going and doing fine.
I have added my two clowns (percs I believe) in and doing well
Here is where I need some input.  I am planning on a mixed reef and would like 2 or 3 tangs, and several other fish that will be visible regularly.
Any recommendations on the tangs (dont get crazy, $), and a group of fish that would go well in a group (cardinals, etc)

Dont worry about my thoughts I need some ideas!!

You can't bet the price and look of a trio of yellow tangs

I have a 6 line wrasse that's pretty cool. Weaves in and out of the rocks.

Wrasses in general are usually a plus, they have unusual swimming patterns and typically eat one type of pest or another. As for tangs, yellow, regal, kole, orange shoulder are all mostly docile and will get along with as much space as you have. I know I'm forgetting several, but it's been a long time since I looked up fish.

I was leaning towards possibly a powder brown tang, but wasn't sure about the trio of yellows.
Thanks for the ideas.

Keep me coming  :)

If you don't want 3 yellows you can mix a few from the zebrasoma family.  Purple and two yellows etc.

I almost went that route but decided on 3 yellows instead.

Other options include

Tennenti, naso, Atlantic blue

A trio of yellow would be very lively and very beautiful. If you want something else though. Schooling banner fish are very active and would look good in a 220. If you do a trio of tangs I would put them in last IMO.

Although it would kill the wallet I've always wanted a trio of purple tangs.

So since I like the idea of the yellow trio, here's my thoughts:
2 x percula clowns
3x yellow tangs
3-5 x pajama cardinals
Wrasse
Mandarin (down the road)

What about also a powder brown?
Shrimp (cleaner or coral banded)?

Powder browns are very nice. I don't have any experience but they are pretty. Naso is also a good choice. They are very docile and would get along fine with the three yellows. Coral banded shrimp is a good add as well. They help keep the bristle worms in check if you get them early on before the bristle worms get to large.
