Well, This is my first Move - Tank Rebuild so I will do my best to bring everyone along. I was very fortunate to purchase a great tank and sump from a local reef friend. The tank is a Great Lakes aquarium build, Rimless with about 168g capacity. I would say with tank/sump/fug water capacity should be around 200 gallons. Listed below is most of my build equipment so far and will post new pictures as I progress.
Equipment List:
- Great Lakes rimless tank 48 wide 36 Deep 18.5 tall, said that kinda weird
- 3 sides low Iron glass
- high volume overflow
- Will run a semi bare bottom
- Vertex Alpha 200 skimmer, Red Dragon pump
- Life reef sump 48L 13w 14tall
- Sump has 3x built in reactors, probe holders, dose hose holders
- Jebao DCP 10000 return pump
- 20g homemade Refugium with baffles
- Jebao DCP300 pump for fug
- Ti 300w heater
- Apex Classic via USB cable
- Apex WAV 3x powerheads
- Apex Temp / Salinity probes
- 2x BRS dose pumps
- 2x Ocean revive LED
- ATI 6 bulb 24in T5
- 36in Truelumen 453nm Blue LED
- ATO tbd on configuration
- 150lbs live rock

At sometime in this hobby we have all had this look on our face, I got this same look months ago when I heard that this tank and system may be on the market soon and then the planning began. I have been running this project through my head since about Feb 17 and since then putting a lot in place in order to make this system a success.
-
We did the actual move this past Saturday and it took four strong guys to get this out of the basement that it was being run in as a system. As you can see by the picture above the Club suction cups came in very handy. I would venture to say that they really made to job possible, not really sure how we would have done without them.
-
Lots of equipment cleaning so far, tank overflow, glass, glass bottom, skimmer and sump so far.
-
The final install spot is a nice corner in my basement, I have a 120g reef tank upstairs already. As I get closer to actually moving this in place I will need to disassemble a lot of the trim off the stand in order to get it through my narrow basement door, should be no issue, right! The tank will fit through this door, up on end though, once again no problem right!
-
Picture one above at the top is a one taken of the system before it was broken down. The footprint of this tank allows for some very cool rock work. I have a brute can full of great rock and I will try to move a really cool arch over from my Solana tank as well.
-
Excellent thread! Can't wait to see this creation come together!

great looking tank cant wait to see it come together
-
Sweet upgrade! Are you keeping the 120 and plumbing into cube?
-
Bout time for an update Rick!?
-
Well, I was just downstairs cleaning my Vertex Skimmer like all good "reefers" do on a regular basis and I came across a Perfect "POTM" spot for the R2R website. Their POTM theme is "Red / Green" and I have this crazy red mushroom rock with one large bright green Paly right in the middle. So I am off now to see if I can capture on camera what I see. It will be a top down photo as well, should be pretty cool if I can get it correct!
I will start posting updates for this system, a lot has happened since the pics on this thread were posted. The tank and system look great already and runs really well so far, more to come.

Jesse, any tips on how to capture this picture would be appreciated. ;) :)

Rick, I’ve had good picture luck by increasing the whites so you don’t get the overwhelming blue. But, If you’re camera savy, change the white balance to 10k or higher and you can use more blue light. Use a tripod to hold the camera and use a timer to release the shutter. The slightest bit of camera shake will make the picture blurry. If you have a quality DSLR, bump the ISO up to 800-1000. And of course, turn off your flow : )

Shameless photography plug....

Also heard that an orange gel filter will reduce the blues.

Thanks guys, man I have a ton to learn about taking pics. Did you take that pic Jesse - crazy detail, looks great if you did!
-
Man talk about a sharp learning curve, I took 2 pics and they looked like something warmed over at best - but I will keep tyring! :alas: :silence:

Ya it’s one I took of my bam bams

Grymtooth,
Can you say more about the Orange Filter, is this something I buy or make?
-
Jesse, I have a cheap digital camera, I have the ISO at 800 but how do I set a timer, what do I look for?
-
There should be a knob or a setting that allows you to set a timer to take the picture. Usually there’s also a setting for 1, 3, or 10 seconds
-
yoop, found it and set it, works pretty good. thanks for the help. :be happy:
-
Let’s see your results once you get a good shot

getting good pics is tricky in this hobby..
https://www.aquariclip.com/ this is a good orange filter for your phone Nikon and cannon also make filters for there camera models or you can find a pack of different colors on ebay. I can show you tomorrow Rick. I usually just use an app on my phone to take out the blue works pretty good but not as much detail as a DSLR
-
I saw a whole pack of filters on Amazon for something like $25. I have been considering those.

Just remember, the glass is the most important piece of equipment in photography. You put a cheap glass filter on a $3,000 lens and you now have a $200 lens. Just something to be aware of...

A couple ok pictures from the new tank - Photography 101 still in session!
-
Lookin good Rick. Keep it up!

Nicely done!

Brian, Jesse, many thanks, the rock work is still in progress. I try to always have very little floor contact and this set hits the spot. I got really lucky on a rock order and I have very minimal bottom of tank contact which allows for great flow. The left side of rock work is still in progress, my lights are temp set up at best and I still want to get my regufium going as well. It is a pleasure to sit and look at all the labor that went into getting this system up and running, so far it is a really great set up. :kacsint2: :be happy:
-
Rick, your scapes are amazing. If my die off continues, I think I’m going to incorporate your theme into my system
-
Jesse thanks, I like putting a fair amount of time into the rock work, to me it gives a tank a type of signature look if you will. This new tank has so many different views to choose from it has made the rock placement and build more challenging, which is a good thing. I'm in a spot now that I need to get my final version of the light set up further along before I can go further with the rock work. :be happy:
