Title: Extreme Tank Makeover
Post by: cyberwollf on January 18, 2010, 19:32:25
Ok, after I get a few other projects knocked out I will start on this shortly (about to remove a sink and facuet, its white with some stains and stuff but works great if anyone wants it)

Ok Heres the list

I have marked off the completed items, updated as of 6Mar2010
1. live stock into a temperay holding tank (55G)
2. Drill 3 holes in my 75 for a Calflo, and build the overflow out of glass (smoked glass)
3. Raise the stand 10 inchs or so, I hate bending over to look into the tank
3. replace the inwall electical box with a double box and run pvc through it (just replace with 2 outles when we sell the house and you'll never know
4. setup frag, skimmer tank
5. redo the baffels in my current 30G sump
6. Make a trashcan RDSB
7. grow Chaeto in a the chamber my skimmer used to be in, add 2nd CLF
8. Skin the stand
9. make reactors for GFO and Carbon
10. use uniseals to turn my cheap seaclone skimmer into a recirc
Added:
11. Paint blackground black
12. Convert from T5 to MH

13. build hood for MH

ok that should be easy  ;D  Also, this extra tanks etc, will be all run off gravity.  the frag tank will be lower than the overflow so water will flow down the pipe through the wall and back up into the frag tank (not high flow, but it doesnt mater) then from the frag tank to the RDSB, then back through the wall into the sump.  I'll just replace the impeller in my Mag 5 and turn it into a mag 7. suggestions?

when ordering your glass pieces for your calflo order black smoked glass ( saw Joel do this on a tank he did a calflo on a few weeks ago) it looks really cool and kinda makes the overflow dissapear a little bit

+1 black.  The back of the tank just fades away, so your livestock is the showcase, and not the back glass.

FUCHSIA!

I think black only looks good on tank with very good lighting, you lose a lot of light with a black background. That being said, go black, I did.

Ok 1 of the 2 prerequisites done.  I had to replace the kitchen sink, and finish a shoe rack before I could start the tank makeover.....

Heres a few shots, Anyone want the old white sink and faucet? It would be great for a shop or something? Otherwise im ganna throw it out.  (I just spent more on a sink an facuet than the whole tank remodel is going to cost!  :o)

Im not surprised, I seen some faucets that were over $300 when we were looking for a new one.

But the sawdust all over my kitchen isnt! I had to trim an inch from all sides of the countertop with a jig saw.... that crap is everywhere now

Ok here's the sump idea.  Rip out the old crappy acrylic baffles and put in new glass ones.  I want to tumble cheato in 2 chambers and a little rubble and sand at the end for pods to grow in.  I will have a RDSB somewhere else in the system.  I dont know that i have ever seen a baffle setup like this, anyone see any problem with the design?

When getting glass baffles cut from the glass shop, are there any special instructions.  I read somewhere that you need to do something along the 2 bottom corners so you dont mess up the current silicone along the tank bottom?
Title: Re: Extreme Tank Makeover
Post by: Wall_Tank on January 19, 2010, 22:45:19
I don't know what everyone has against acrylic, especially on small sumps.    In any event, just cut a small champfer on the bottom corners.......look at the size of the silicone bead in the bottom of the tank.

How big is the sump, looks like alot to fit into one space.

Also back to the whole system design, with such a large gravity drain system, make sure the sump can hold the water when the power goes off.
Title: Re: Extreme Tank Makeover
Post by: cyberwollf on January 20, 2010, 07:12:13
The current acrylic baffels leak pretty bad ( chaeto sneaks into the next chamber through the seam) plus I'd like to make the sock and pump sections smaller with 2 macro sections. I figured if I'm ordering glass anyways, it's cheap and just redo the whole thing. I'll post a drawing of it's current baffel setup

Under the current plan i actually am going to put the skimmer in the fishroom and run it in a tub in there
Title: Re: Extreme Tank Makeover
Post by: cyberwollf on January 31, 2010, 17:57:34
Ok, this week I am back from California so i will be working on the sump and probably building a protein skimmer like JDs.

Also I have one of those black color films on my tank.  Well i fliped it over to see what it would look like with a blue background... And i actaully like it.  It shows much more dirt and will require me to keep the tank cleaner... But i actually like the color rather than black.  It makes the tank seem brighter.
Title: Re: Extreme Tank Makeover
Post by: ghurlag on January 31, 2010, 18:54:55
What color blue?  Is it the light to dark gradient?  I always loved that style, just wish I could get it painted on the tank instead of taping it.  There is nothing worse that water behind those things.  :)  Looking forward to seeing the stages of development and results.

Ok got some work done with the holiday today.  I tore down the sump and put the rubble and chaeto in a 55G for temporary storage.

Sump drained down before moving

New Temporary sump

Baffles riped out of the old sump
(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi404.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp129%2Fcyberwollf%2Fd2449cd4.jpg&hash=d34dae7a59ed5af546242b031e73c78d19b001fd)

I got it cleaned up and the glass on order.

I also noticed the sand in my sump was clumped togeather.  I assume its from over dosing.  I have my topoff water running through Kalk so maybe thats too much

OK part of this project i was dreading was drilling through the wall and putting a setup where a huge countertop currently exists in the laundry room.  However this idea just came to me.  It will just be an integral vertical cabinet.  That will also give me the height i have always wanted so i can do a gravity drain refuge/pod farm.

i think i have the may meeting so its ganna be done before that.  I hard part is actually setting up a temporary tank for all my current fish and drilling the tank.  Whenever I get myself to accomplish that, the rest will be pretty quick, especially now that drilling through a wall is not involved

Yep but its currently be used as my sump.  When i get my real sump done, i'll switch over chaeto to the real sump and move my livestock and rock to the temperary tank

Heres a pic of its up and running, Its starting to span all over the room... maybe my basement will turn into justins room?

Ok Got the baffles redone in the sump, Silicone was much more messy than I wanted but its done.  In hindsight Im thinking i might add another peice of glass right before the pump and run a piece of spong in there just to be sure to macro makes it to the pump

Ok the tank is the basement still. I am going to get some rustolem Black paint today to brush on.  I dont want to spray it in the basement.

Nikki, what kind of white paint did you use for your stand? Does everyone think it is neccesary to paint the inside of the their stand?

Ever thought about using a black background with a little KY jelly.....Looked good on Lazy's tank

I would paint the stand if it is closed......if open to the air, I would not worry too much

Yea I has the black film previously, but I'm looking for something permenant.  I will this use a little bit of the black film for one of the sides. The tank will be veiwable from front and 1 side, but I don't want to paint the other side because I will probably be selling the tank in a few years and I figure most folks will only want the back painted

ULG concrete paint made for water proofing basements is a decent paint for painting your stand and at a fair price but it leaves a rough texture. It's abrasive enough to scuff up your hands!

Swimming pool two part epoxy paint is the better way to go but is more expensive. It's about 50 buck a gallon (not available in smaller quantities) but it is more durable and leaves a nicer, smoother finish.

I had already bought paint by the time i saw Joel's post (and I'm cheap).  I just went with a latex gloss white for the inside of the stand.  Just something to seal the 2x4s and a little protection from the salt.

Since i didnt want to spraypaint it in my basement, Joels reccomended brush on rustoleum as an alternate for painting the background.  Man i wish i would have just sprayed it lol.  Painting glass sucks. It will definitely take a few coats to get good coverage, i can still see light shineing through the brush strokes.

Here's the (now white) stand

Wes, I know I must be a sick man wherein I think your calfo overflow and the black glass, and painted back pane are all awesome.  I want to build a calfo in my 10g now :D  If I screw it up, I'm only out the $13 for the tank.  Where did you get the glass from and how affordable was it?
Title: Re: Extreme Tank Makeover

That small of a tank you can just go with black acrylic cheaper probably. It will be harder to keep clean though. If you screw up just cut out the silicone

1/4" smoked glass was about $60 for the 2 pieces ~47x5

Acylic + Glass + Silicone isn't such a good idea. It will make a seal, but holding under pressure is another story. Lowes does however cut, and sell glass :D

Yeah, but as long as you are only running the water level in the calfo 1/2" below the tank level, there is still surface skimming and almost zero pressure on the acyrlic

If it dies, it dies :D  The 10g is my sandbox, so to speak.  It's also where all the aggressive offenders are relegated to.  A falling overflow might straighten a few of them up :)

Thats what I was wondering. It wants to float, but water pushes it down. A delicate balance?

Whatever the case, I am doing this with my next smaller tank build, and I think its going to be a 26G BowFront.

Ok got it on its stand...  Of course I came out with a few oversights durring the project, but no show stoppers.

1. I may have raised the stand too much, I love the height, but with the hood I will have to build for the MH I will be covering a good bit of the basement window i think.  All the space to the left of the tank will be a vertical cabinet to hold frag tank, ATO, etc.

(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi404.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp129%2Fcyberwollf%2Fcffed539.jpg&hash=39528c89d649bc466dcfefcb5902ffbc1876cd82)

2. Lockline through the Calfo is turning out to be more trouble than its worth.  I wanted to save as much depth as possible in the tank, but i sized the glass about a 1/4 too close for my bulkhead and lockline  :(  I am comming up over the back of the tank with PVC and then going down into the calfo and through the bulkhead.  Its hard to tell in the picture, but the elbow screwed into the calfo is almost touching the back of the tank and the braceing will not allow me to get the pipe into the connection.  Im gonna have to get a 3/4 barb and use about 4 inchs of viynal tubing to get a little bend so i can get the pipe into it.

We could just drill two more holes out the back of your aquarium and run a threaded nipple from the back glass bulk head to the bulk head  in your over flow box.

The other things you can do are;

You can trim about a 1/8" or so off the back of the bulk head that will give you a little more clearance. ( I did this on the bulk heads for that 150 you saw me drill the other day so they would fit inside that small black overflow box, it did not harm the threads.)

And you can trim the plastic frame on your aquarium. Basically notch the frame out (cut out the frame lip where the lid would rest) down to the back glass of the aquarium where you need to hook up your plumbing. I take a hack saw blade and carefully cut the trim down to the glass, then I score the plastic with a razor knife from left to right between the cuts and then take channel locks, grab the piece I want removed and pry it back and forth. It'll break off where it was scored.

Done this many times for various reasons, does not harm the aquarium and won't hurt the frame integrity in this case because your far away from the center brace.

THis is a good tip for those out there who build sumps out of 75 gallon or 125 gallon aquariums and want to hang an acrylic sock holder on the lip of the aquarium only to realize the trim is to thick. Just notch the aquarium frame as described above and the sock holder fits just fine.

Wes, if I can help, let me know and I'll give you a hand.

Trimming everything just a little worked great. few threads off the bulkhead and elbow, and about 1/4 of the flat surround on the brace.

They are 5-6 month old 15k XMs.  I know my water does have alot of particles clouding the water right now, from playing in the tank, but right under the bulb is <100 PAR at 6 inchs... I need to see what Justin or you are getting on your tanks.  Maybe the PAR meter is acting wierd around MH?? Gurlags MH was LOW, Joshs MH was LOW, my 4x54 T5s were putting out >200 PAR at that depth.  The only resonable MH PAR was Nikki's....

When Jake tested my Par it was just over a 1000 a couple inches from the bulb if that gives you any indication. It is a 250w Radium with Coralvue electronic ballast and spider parabolic reflector.

Yea Im getting over 1000 about 1.5" from the bulb, they are sitting 9" above the water.  Just above the water I am only getting 350. Then my upper most corals are about 6" below the water and I'm only getting about 100 PAR there. How far are yalls bulbs below the water?

BTW. I am using simple parabolic reflectors.  I cant believe it would be a >100 PAR difference.... Starting to rethink this whole t5-MH switch...

Ok snag! I cannot figure out where to drill the anti back siphon..... I drilled it just above the elbow where its circled in the pic, but:

1. the hole was not big enough so it was just a venturi siphon...
2. the angle i drilled it at made a little water fountain
3. the BIG problem. even if i had a bigger hole and no fountain, the water in the caflo is going to equilize to the calfos hieght.  Water will come back through the lockline and fill the calfo... the only problem is this also is high enough to drain.  so i have a secondary siphon, than goes to my drain.  there is NO way my sump can hold the extra water...

Anyone have ANY idea how to make this work... i been stareing at it and nothing comes to me.

Wes, move your loclines until they are near that top of the water, then they'll draw in air right after the pump stops.
Title: Re: Extreme Tank Makeover
Post by: Wall_Tank on March 07, 2010, 19:41:02
The overflow should drain to some minimum level .  Drill the hole slightly above this..    This should be below the water level in operation.   To test this, just shut off the return pump and then lift the loc-line so the syphon breaks quickly.  Then watch the water level equalize.

looking at the water line in your picture it looks like the tank may not be level  ;D and those are some big waves

Wes, move your loclines until they are near that top of the water, then they'll draw in air right after the pump stops.

I am not running enough lockline to reach the surface, and I dont want it to just blow at the surface, i want to be able to use it for directional flow.

The overflow should drain to some minimum level .  Drill the hole slightly above this..    This should be below the water level in operation.   To test this, just shut off the return pump and then lift the loc-line so the syphon breaks quickly.  Then watch the water level equalize.

The problem is if I drill a hole below waterlevel in the calfo then the tank water flows from the tank, back through the lockline, out the antisiphon hole and into the calfo.  This raises the waterlevel in the calfo and that water goes down the drains into the sump...probably about 10 gallons or so before that equilizes... dang it!

The only thing i can think of is drilling a hole at a downward angle just below the top elbow

Now I understand.  Good thing you engineered that 1st :)

Drill it high should work, hope it doesn't splash too much.  Make sure that where you drill it, it can't shoot a little crooked and shoot out of the tank

LOL, i just saw a picture of the lockline coming through the calfo and said that looks cool, I'll do that... I didnt even think about how crazy it would be... the antisiphon hole is basicly a connection between the main tank and the calfo.... I finally got an idea, let me draw it up

Ok, replace the top elbow with a T and have a piece of tubing come down into the calfo. It will be just below the water level in the calfo.  When the pump dies and the calfo siphon drain draws the waterlevel down, the tubing will suck air and hopefully kill the back siphon.  What are the odds that it just sucks air and acts like a venturi?

Oh Brian, Wes and I's (and Beccas) friendship started when I had to rescue his tank when his skimmer overflowed right after I joined the club. That being said, Wes make sure she has my number ;)

On my way back home. One thing I have been thinking about is leveling the tank. I think the tank is within 1/8" of level and the calfo might be about 1/8" off too. Bottom line, only half the calfo is skimming the surface. So... I want to drain about half the water from the tank and most of the water from the sump and use a floor Jack to jack up the tank and slip some 1/8" plywood under 2 legs. I plan on jacking from the 2x4 directly in contact with the tank on the right side. Any problems with jacking a half full tank up about 1/2"?

idk but it sounds like you will have the answer you seek very soon.

so you have a 2x4 under the right side of the tank tank where you can place the jack and the jack can be placed on the floor directly under said 2x4 therefore lift the entire stand and tank so you can shim it up. if this is the plan i vote that it should work fine.

also i have a bottle jack if you need one small enough to fit inside the stand, i am not sure what you are working with but a reg floor jack might be tricky to fit where you need it.

Ok, after a little time off from the upgrade, Im ready to get back into this.  I need to get the doors and hood built quick before I host the May meeting.  To refresh, heres my list of upgrades.  Strikethrough is done or OBE

1. live stock into a temperay holding tank (55G)
11. Paint blackground black
12. Convert from T5 to MH

13. build hood for MH

After the controller is built, implement daily water change system

I think the brightness of the tank makes the side cabinet disappear.  You are just used to nothing there.  I don't think it makes the tank look smaller.  But I have no sense of style or interior design, so take it for what its worth.... a few electrons at most.

Ok, After some months of being lazy, and just doing normal maintenance, Im getting back into the upgrade.  I have been busy painting our entire upstairs and finishing a shoe rack for the wife (that I started before winter  ::))

Almost done.  Gotta finish monting the shelves.
(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi404.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp129%2Fcyberwollf%2Fc9a93640.jpg&hash=11635a5cd54f6185475227386f454b42ebc70597)

The skin is in the garage getting stained (finally  ::))  I Always intended to use the space to the left of the tank for vertical storage.  I mounted a 2nd shelf today.  I have 5 gallons of RO for ATO (bottom) and now I will have 5 gallons of Kalk to drip.  I figure about 1 second a drip will be about a gallon a day, which is about 10 ppm CAL on my 80 gallon system.

this shelf is just tacked in place with screws until i decide exactly what i want to have on the shelves.

How come you are dripping Kalk from a 5g bucket instead of the reactor?

I've burnt through 3 impellers on the mj1200 mixing pump! you can see the reactor in the picture to the left of the sump.  I can better monitor exactly how much kalk im dosing now instead of just adding a 1/2 cup every month or so to the reactor.

As i posted in the controller thread. Temp is back within a reasonable range and yesterday was a fluke.

I tested for the first time in months a few days ago and noticed my mag was 850!!! I have been dosing magflake and epsom salt since then and now am up to 1000.  Should be back up to 1300 by this weekend.  I put a coat of poly on the rest of the skin today and should be ready for tank picture tomorrow.

So i reported in to school yesterday and they told me the next thing on the schedule is Wed.  Gotta love the Air Force.  So i got some time to work on the tank.  Something that has always bugged me about the tank, it is about 1/4" low on one side so the coast to coast calfo on skims on one side.  I plan on draining the sump and about 1/2-2/3 of the DT water and jacking up the left side and putting some 1/4" plywood under the feet.  Anyone close got a jack and some free time today :)

That was easier than i thought.  Didnt even drain any water. Just jacked up the corner and was done in less than 5 mins.

And I got the plumbing done to run the skimmer from my overflow, soon as the skimmer part comes in.

Took some catching up, but it all looks real nice.  Bet Becca loves her new shoe rack!

I've been having low mag problems too.  I wonder how many people do and don't know it?

Tons! Lots of people don't test for it. The test is alot harder to do than the API kits that most people use. But no worse than any other high end kit.

Sad day for my tank.  After +4 years of up and running, tonight will be the first night I wont feed the fish before bed   :-Cry

Sold the entire setup to a guy I work with.  Trying to get rid of a lot of stuff preparing for the up comming move in March.

Yea it does kinda suck, but now I have plenty of time to plan a new tank after we move.  either a Large shark tank, or an upscale small rimless sps tank.
