Ok, after I get a few other projects knocked out I will start on this shortly (about to remove a sink and facuet, its white with some stains and stuff but works great if anyone wants it)
Ok Heres the list
I have marked off the completed items, updated as of 6Mar2010
1. live stock into a temperay holding tank (55G)
2. Drill 3 holes in my 75 for a Calflo, and build the overflow out of glass (smoked glass)
3. Raise the stand 10 inchs or so, I hate bending over to look into the tank
3. replace the inwall electical box with a double box and run pvc through it (just replace with 2 outles when we sell the house and you'll never know
4. setup frag, skimmer tank
5. redo the baffels in my current 30G sump
6. Make a trashcan RDSB
7. grow Chaeto in a the chamber my skimmer used to be in, add 2nd CLF
8. Skin the stand
9. make reactors for GFO and Carbon
10. use uniseals to turn my cheap seaclone skimmer into a recirc
Added:
11. Paint blackground black
12. Convert from T5 to MH
13. build hood for MH
ok that should be easy ;D Also, this extra tanks etc, will be all run off gravity. the frag tank will be lower than the overflow so water will flow down the pipe through the wall and back up into the frag tank (not high flow, but it doesnt mater) then from the frag tank to the RDSB, then back through the wall into the sump. I'll just replace the impeller in my Mag 5 and turn it into a mag 7. suggestions?
-
wow cant wait to see it all done looks like its going to be a fun one
-
Is that all you are doing? ;D
-
ok painting the background. I have black plastic at it is. paint it black or blue (like Lazylivin's) I like the blue color, but not sure.. thoughts?
-
black
-
when ordering your glass pieces for your calflo order black smoked glass ( saw Joel do this on a tank he did a calflo on a few weeks ago) it looks really cool and kinda makes the overflow dissapear a little bit
-
+1 black. The back of the tank just fades away, so your livestock is the showcase, and not the back glass.
-
FUCHSIA!
I think black only looks good on tank with very good lighting, you lose a lot of light with a black background. That being said, go black, I did.
-
Forgive me, please... "Once you go black..."

u never go back

Ok 1 of the 2 prerequisites done. I had to replace the kitchen sink, and finish a shoe rack before I could start the tank makeover.....
Heres a few shots, Anyone want the old white sink and faucet? It would be great for a shop or something? Otherwise im ganna throw it out. (I just spent more on a sink an facuet than the whole tank remodel is going to cost! :o)

Im not surprised, I seen some faucets that were over $300 when we were looking for a new one.
-
That sink is totally hawt ;)

But the sawdust all over my kitchen isnt! I had to trim an inch from all sides of the countertop with a jig saw.... that crap is everywhere now
-
Ok here's the sump idea. Rip out the old crappy acrylic baffles and put in new glass ones. I want to tumble cheato in 2 chambers and a little rubble and sand at the end for pods to grow in. I will have a RDSB somewhere else in the system. I dont know that i have ever seen a baffle setup like this, anyone see any problem with the design?
When getting glass baffles cut from the glass shop, are there any special instructions. I read somewhere that you need to do something along the 2 bottom corners so you dont mess up the current silicone along the tank bottom?
-
I don't know what everyone has against acrylic, especially on small sumps. In any event, just cut a small champfer on the bottom corners.......look at the size of the silicone bead in the bottom of the tank.
How big is the sump, looks like alot to fit into one space.
Also back to the whole system design, with such a large gravity drain system, make sure the sump can hold the water when the power goes off.
-
The current acrylic baffels leak pretty bad ( chaeto sneaks into the next chamber through the seam) plus I'd like to make the sock and pump sections smaller with 2 macro sections. I figured if I'm ordering glass anyways, it's cheap and just redo the whole thing. I'll post a drawing of it's current baffel setup
-
heres what the current layout the way i bought the sump
-
Ever thought about putting a chamber in for a bigger skimmer?
-
Under the current plan i actually am going to put the skimmer in the fishroom and run it in a tub in there
-
Ok, this week I am back from California so i will be working on the sump and probably building a protein skimmer like JDs.
Also I have one of those black color films on my tank. Well i fliped it over to see what it would look like with a blue background... And i actaully like it. It shows much more dirt and will require me to keep the tank cleaner... But i actually like the color rather than black. It makes the tank seem brighter.
-
What color blue? Is it the light to dark gradient? I always loved that style, just wish I could get it painted on the tank instead of taping it. There is nothing worse that water behind those things. :) Looking forward to seeing the stages of development and results.
-
ya iv allways faved the blue in tanks it does make it brighter
-
Ok got some work done with the holiday today. I tore down the sump and put the rubble and chaeto in a 55G for temporary storage.
Sump drained down before moving

I got it cleaned up and the glass on order.
I also noticed the sand in my sump was clumped togeather. I assume its from over dosing. I have my topoff water running through Kalk so maybe thats too much
(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi404.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp129%2Fcyberwollf%2F00cad139.jpg&hash=31b8852447f66c98b6660377c8fde5cc63245913)
-
OK part of this project i was dreading was drilling through the wall and putting a setup where a huge countertop currently exists in the laundry room. However this idea just came to me. It will just be an integral vertical cabinet. That will also give me the height i have always wanted so i can do a gravity drain refuge/pod farm.
-
This is what it would look like skinned
-
Lookin' good. Get it done before summer so we can work on mine next :)
-
i think i have the may meeting so its ganna be done before that. I hard part is actually setting up a temporary tank for all my current fish and drilling the tank. Whenever I get myself to accomplish that, the rest will be pretty quick, especially now that drilling through a wall is not involved
-
And you have the temp tank already, don't you?
-
And you have the temp tank already, don't you?
Yep but its currently be used as my sump. When i get my real sump done, i'll switch over chaeto to the real sump and move my livestock and rock to the temperary tank
Heres a pic of its up and running, Its starting to span all over the room... maybe my basement will turn into justins room?

I got it from Justin's Empty Tank Rental Shop. I think there is still a 200 and a seahorse tank for rent

Ok Got the baffles redone in the sump, Silicone was much more messy than I wanted but its done. In hindsight Im thinking i might add another peice of glass right before the pump and run a piece of spong in there just to be sure to macro makes it to the pump
(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi404.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp129%2Fcyberwollf%2F87efb6f5.jpg&hash=7b05303f852496d38317175ed8efff83b6b3ca26)
Water enters on the right and pumped out on the left
-
Nice Job Wes.
-
Looks good man. Give needlepoint mesh a try. I've been using it to keep my macro in place and it works will without clogging up.
I got my sump made tonight also, I'll post pics tonight.
PREPARE FOR THE RETURN OF DR. SKIMMER!
-
I went ahead and added the extra baffel. The silicone says 24 hours to full cure. Looks like water will be in it tomorrow night.
-
Wes, is the water flow from left to right?

Oh, NOW I see it! Who writes below pictures anyway?!

sweet looking sump wes!!!!
-
Ok after some carbon drama, I got the sump contents moved over from the temp tank to the sump, Now I got to clean the temp tank and move all my livestock over to it (which i am dreading) So I can get my 75 Drilled and raise my stand.

I don't care how big your thinking about going, you wont have the biggest tank in the Eglin area...

I plan on going 42,001 gallons MUHAHAHA... I wouldnt want to pay those bills. Thats why they charge admission lol
-
Wes, I have the same problem where I am... Gotta wait for the next house before I can go bigger. But with the costs of the hobby where they are anyway, I just love my 29 nano :)
-
+3 on a bigger house with a basement.
-
+4

Ok, i just had the least fun night ever.... But i had to get the 75 emptied so it can get drilled this weekend.

I also updated the very first post in the thread and marked out the things that are complete or OBE.
-
looked like is was fun ;D
-
Raised 2x4 stand is done. Will post pics when i get back from the comedy club
-
sweet cant wait to see
-
I raised it 10 inches. There was a slight amount of give when i bounced on it with all my weight so i put a cross bar across the back. May also look into attaching it to a stud in the wall, it has a narrow wheelbase
(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi404.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp129%2Fcyberwollf%2F487b211e.jpg&hash=50649f8b3c93f0fab9065f65b2f25dc2d998e827)

Im also ganna do this genius idea of running the return lockline through the calfo

I like this concept. We need to chat about this today at the meeting
-
looks good
-
Thanks to Joel! He stopped by today and drilled the holes for me. They look great. I will order the glass for the Calfo on monday

They're not symmetrical :D J/K, that looks really good. I can't wait for you to have this up and running in all its awesome glory
-
wow u trusted joel to do the work you have guts ;D ;D
-
Shut up you guys :D
Happy to help Wes, can't wait to see it together and running.

Have you tryed the galaxy ballasts yet?

Have you tryed the galaxy ballasts yet?
Nope, but Justin runs them and he is happy with them

That I do I think they are great ballasts

Ok the tank is the basement still. I am going to get some rustolem Black paint today to brush on. I dont want to spray it in the basement.
Nikki, what kind of white paint did you use for your stand? Does everyone think it is neccesary to paint the inside of the their stand?
-
it helps and protects it
-

Ever thought about using a black background with a little KY jelly.....Looked good on Lazy's tank
I would paint the stand if it is closed......if open to the air, I would not worry too much
-
Yea I has the black film previously, but I'm looking for something permenant. I will this use a little bit of the black film for one of the sides. The tank will be veiwable from front and 1 side, but I don't want to paint the other side because I will probably be selling the tank in a few years and I figure most folks will only want the back painted
-
good point about thinking ahead
-
ULG concrete paint made for water proofing basements is a decent paint for painting your stand and at a fair price but it leaves a rough texture. It's abrasive enough to scuff up your hands!
Swimming pool two part epoxy paint is the better way to go but is more expensive. It's about 50 buck a gallon (not available in smaller quantities) but it is more durable and leaves a nicer, smoother finish.
Joel
-
thats what im going to use on the hood when i re do it is the pool paint
-
I had already bought paint by the time i saw Joel's post (and I'm cheap). I just went with a latex gloss white for the inside of the stand. Just something to seal the 2x4s and a little protection from the salt.
Since i didnt want to spraypaint it in my basement, Joels reccomended brush on rustoleum as an alternate for painting the background. Man i wish i would have just sprayed it lol. Painting glass sucks. It will definitely take a few coats to get good coverage, i can still see light shineing through the brush strokes.
Here's the (now white) stand

ya painting glass sucks
-
dont paint it get a peice of black sign vinyl so if you ever do want to change. it its easy thats what i use
-
that's a good idea. I imagine it sticks fairly well, but then again, not all of us have unlimited access to sign vinyl. :P
-
Too late  I had vinyl on it before and just didn't like it. This way I KNOW there will be no bubbles and paint was only $5. I doubt I will ever change it since I ordered black glass for the calfo anyways.
-

Yay! You listened to me for once!

Wow they already called back the glass is ready for pickup. Not bad for 2 hour wait :)
-
What silicone are you going to use?
-
What silicone are you going to use?
I got some GE1 left over from the sump build
-
Wes, I know I must be a sick man wherein I think your calfo overflow and the black glass, and painted back pane are all awesome. I want to build a calfo in my 10g now :D If I screw it up, I'm only out the $13 for the tank. Where did you get the glass from and how affordable was it?
-
That small of a tank you can just go with black acrylic cheaper probably. It will be harder to keep clean though. If you screw up just cut out the silicone
1/4" smoked glass was about $60 for the 2 pieces ~47x5
-
that wouldnt be bad
-
Or I could just go with clear acrylic from Lowe's - even cheaper :)
-
Acylic + Glass + Silicone isn't such a good idea. It will make a seal, but holding under pressure is another story. Lowes does however cut, and sell glass :D
-

Yeah, but as long as you are only running the water level in the calfo 1/2" below the tank level, there is still surface skimming and almost zero pressure on the acyrlic
-
If it dies, it dies :D The 10g is my sandbox, so to speak. It's also where all the aggressive offenders are relegated to. A falling overflow might straighten a few of them up :)
-
Yeah, but as long as you are only running the water level in the calfo 1/2" below the tank level, there is still surface skimming and almost zero pressure on the acyrlic
Thats what I was wondering. It wants to float, but water pushes it down. A delicate balance?
Whatever the case, I am doing this with my next smaller tank build, and I think its going to be a 26G BowFront.
-
You can't beat the prices of scrap at Meyers plasitc. If you have piercings you might get it for free LOLOL

Ok, I will have to retract my previous comment about tearing down the tank being the least pleasant thing ever.
Has anyone every cleaned sand.... Boy that sucked!!! but Im cheap and the work wasnt that hard so it was worth it... But stinky and nasty...
Glass is ready for pickup. I'll get it drilled and assymbled in the next few days. I need to get water in the tank by the weekend. I have to have my ATO back online by sunday because I fly out to California on monday ;D
-

i have i just put it all in a buket and take it out side and use the hose on it it is nasty and smells great
-
Joel Drilled holes in my Calfo glass today (thanks!). I got it siliconed in, after its cured I'll water test it. Now off to Lowes to spend tons of money on plumbing.

-
YES!
-
looken great
-
Ok got it on its stand... Of course I came out with a few oversights durring the project, but no show stoppers.
1. I may have raised the stand too much, I love the height, but with the hood I will have to build for the MH I will be covering a good bit of the basement window i think. All the space to the left of the tank will be a vertical cabinet to hold frag tank, ATO, etc.
(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi404.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp129%2Fcyberwollf%2Fcffed539.jpg&hash=39528c89d649bc466dcfefcb5902ffbc1876cd82)
2. Lockline through the Calfo is turning out to be more trouble than its worth. I wanted to save as much depth as possible in the tank, but i sized the glass about a 1/4 too close for my bulkhead and lockline :( I am comming up over the back of the tank with PVC and then going down into the calfo and through the bulkhead. Its hard to tell in the picture, but the elbow screwed into the calfo is almost touching the back of the tank and the braceing will not allow me to get the pipe into the connection. Im gonna have to get a 3/4 barb and use about 4 inchs of viynal tubing to get a little bend so i can get the pipe into it.

-
Do that thing I said.
-
We could just drill two more holes out the back of your aquarium and run a threaded nipple from the back glass bulk head to the bulk head in your over flow box.
The other things you can do are;
You can trim about a 1/8" or so off the back of the bulk head that will give you a little more clearance. ( I did this on the bulk heads for that 150 you saw me drill the other day so they would fit inside that small black overflow box, it did not harm the threads.)
And you can trim the plastic frame on your aquarium. Basically notch the frame out (cut out the frame lip where the lid would rest) down to the back glass of the aquarium where you need to hook up your plumbing. I take a hack saw blade and carefully cut the trim down to the glass, then I score the plastic with a razor knife from left to right between the cuts and then take channel locks, grab the piece I want removed and pry it back and forth. It'll break off where it was scored.
Done this many times for various reasons, does not harm the aquarium and won't hurt the frame integrity in this case because your far away from the center brace.
THis is a good tip for those out there who build sumps out of 75 gallon or 125 gallon aquariums and want to hang an acrylic sock holder on the lip of the aquarium only to realize the trim is to thick. Just notch the aquarium frame as described above and the sock holder fits just fine.
Wes, if I can help, let me know and I'll give you a hand.

great ideas joel

We could just drill two more holes out the back of your aquarium and run a threaded nipple from the back glass bulk head to the bulk head in your over flow box.

Thanks Joel, That exactly what me and josh talked about last night, Trim the bulkhead, Trim the elbow, AND notch the tank a little.
ABOUT TO GO LEAK CHECK THE CALFO!
-
Trimming everything just a little worked great. few threads off the bulkhead and elbow, and about 1/4 of the flat surround on the brace.

There was a couple of tiny leaks in the short sides of the calfo. Doesnt really matter, but I'll run a little bead of silicone around them again once it drys
-
thats good triming it looks like it worked well
-
You are an inspiration to us all!
-
Very cool, I thought that would work for you.
-
Ok I got a backbone of a canopy done. I Havent trimed the verticle supports yet, I think Im ganna cut it down so the bulbs will be 9 inchs from water and then put a coat of paint on it. Should have them burning my tonight
(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi404.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp129%2Fcyberwollf%2Fdf5cc922.jpg&hash=482d369772eedee0c26bd87c9cdf258e7b66957e)
-
YES!
I got a new light solution, too, but they are "rigged" in a Red Green show sort of way (minus the duct tape)
-
u going to leave it open like that
-
With the hieght of the tank and the angle to where you sit on the couch. I think the lights are going to blind you, so I will have some kind of canopy. I'm thinking it will be piano hindged and just open at the center
Similar to this picture i found on google

That's what I will be going for on my 29 this summer. Take notes, Wes :D You're going to be helping me. So is Josh.
-
looking great
-
Are you gonna leave that open or are ya gonna close it
-
o ok that will look great
-
Should have them burning my tonight
As Promised. How long does it take MH to get to full brightness? I checked them after 10 mins or so and from the PAR results I HOPE it takes longer to get to full streght
Yes it is infact a fire/electrocution waiting to happen lol

10-15 minutes should be enough. If they are brand new bulbs, the color will shift over the first week or so of burn in......that could affect PAR too.
-
looks nice

They are 5-6 month old 15k XMs. I know my water does have alot of particles clouding the water right now, from playing in the tank, but right under the bulb is <100 PAR at 6 inchs... I need to see what Justin or you are getting on your tanks. Maybe the PAR meter is acting wierd around MH?? Gurlags MH was LOW, Joshs MH was LOW, my 4x54 T5s were putting out >200 PAR at that depth. The only resonable MH PAR was Nikki's....
-
When Jake tested my Par it was just over a 1000 a couple inches from the bulb if that gives you any indication. It is a 250w Radium with Coralvue electronic ballast and spider parabolic reflector.

Yea Im getting over 1000 about 1.5" from the bulb, they are sitting 9" above the water. Just above the water I am only getting 350. Then my upper most corals are about 6" below the water and I'm only getting about 100 PAR there. How far are yalls bulbs below the water?
BTW. I am using simple parabolic reflectors. I cant believe it would be a >100 PAR difference.... Starting to rethink this whole t5-MH switch...

I got all the plumbing done, the sump lighted, and ATO online Pics soon

Nope, I thinking about running them closer to the water... what is height is everyone running theirs at?
-
I like the aquascaping, I really like the volcano look on the right side.
-
The aquascaping looks great. Getting your lights closer will help a lot.
-
Nope, I thinking about running them closer to the water... what is height is everyone running theirs at?
Reflector body is about 8" off the top of the tank, which puts the bulb about 12"
-
I got the reflector about 8 which puts the bulb just a hair above 9...???? I think i have some polishing compound somewhere. I'll try to pollish these reflectors up. they are a little dull. definitely cannot see your reflection in them.
-
Man, you're cutting it down to the wire. Good luck!
-
Ok snag! I cannot figure out where to drill the anti back siphon..... I drilled it just above the elbow where its circled in the pic, but:
1. the hole was not big enough so it was just a venturi siphon...
2. the angle i drilled it at made a little water fountain
3. the BIG problem. even if i had a bigger hole and no fountain, the water in the caflo is going to equilize to the calfos hieght. Water will come back through the lockline and fill the calfo... the only problem is this also is high enough to drain. so i have a secondary siphon, than goes to my drain. there is NO way my sump can hold the extra water...
Anyone have ANY idea how to make this work... i been stareing at it and nothing comes to me.
-
Wes, move your loclines until they are near that top of the water, then they'll draw in air right after the pump stops.
-
The overflow should drain to some minimum level . Drill the hole slightly above this.. This should be below the water level in operation. To test this, just shut off the return pump and then lift the loc-line so the syphon breaks quickly. Then watch the water level equalize.
-
looking at the water line in your picture it looks like the tank may not be level ;D and those are some big waves
-
Wes, move your loclines until they are near that top of the water, then they'll draw in air right after the pump stops.
I am not running enough lockline to reach the surface, and I dont want it to just blow at the surface, i want to be able to use it for directional flow.

The problem is if I drill a hole below waterlevel in the calfo then the tank water flows from the tank, back through the lockline, out the antisiphon hole and into the calfo. This raises the waterlevel in the calfo and that water goes down the drains into the sump...probably about 10 gallons or so before that equilizes... dang it!
The only thing i can think of is drilling a hole at a downward angle just below the top elbow
-

Now I understand. Good thing you engineered that 1st :)
Drill it high should work, hope it doesn't splash too much. Make sure that where you drill it, it can't shoot a little crooked and shoot out of the tank
-
Now I understand. Good thing you engineered that 1st :)
LOL, i just saw a picture of the lockline coming through the calfo and said that looks cool, I'll do that... I didnt even think about how crazy it would be... the antisiphon hole is basicly a connection between the main tank and the calfo.... I finally got an idea, let me draw it up
-
Ok, replace the top elbow with a T and have a piece of tubing come down into the calfo. It will be just below the water level in the calfo. When the pump dies and the calfo siphon drain draws the waterlevel down, the tubing will suck air and hopefully kill the back siphon. What are the odds that it just sucks air and acts like a venturi?
-
SHould work..... will the line kink over time?
-
that looks like it would work the line shouldnt kink it mite after a long time
-
should work!
-
Finaly, saftey.... Now I just got to adjust the timers. Hey, I still got 2 hours until I leave for my flight ;D

Do you have anyone on standby for Becca to call if all hell breaks loose? Since I only work a couple miles away, I could be available. I won't volunteer Josh, but I bet he'd help too. :). I'm just saying, since you are finishing this right before flying out. Let me know if I can help.

Lol. My wife met Josh before I did. While in LAX, I got a call from her that the tank was flooding. So, I posted my address and asked who could help. He didn't even know me, but he came and fixed it up

Oh Brian, Wes and I's (and Beccas) friendship started when I had to rescue his tank when his skimmer overflowed right after I joined the club. That being said, Wes make sure she has my number ;)

yeah I definately have a few "lessons learned" that were unforseen.
Sitting here bored in Chicago O'hare, i just reread all 12 pages of this. Even though I did all the work is was cool to see how fast it went togeather. First post was only on 18 Jan
when I get ALL done I will post a picture timeline and here and RC (gatta wait until you finish a project to post there or they will just flame all your ideas, you know what I'm talking about ;)

On my way back home. One thing I have been thinking about is leveling the tank. I think the tank is within 1/8" of level and the calfo might be about 1/8" off too. Bottom line, only half the calfo is skimming the surface. So... I want to drain about half the water from the tank and most of the water from the sump and use a floor Jack to jack up the tank and slip some 1/8" plywood under 2 legs. I plan on jacking from the 2x4 directly in contact with the tank on the right side. Any problems with jacking a half full tank up about 1/2"?

idk but it sounds like you will have the answer you seek very soon.
so you have a 2x4 under the right side of the tank tank where you can place the jack and the jack can be placed on the floor directly under said 2x4 therefore lift the entire stand and tank so you can shim it up. if this is the plan i vote that it should work fine.
also i have a bottle jack if you need one small enough to fit inside the stand, i am not sure what you are working with but a reg floor jack might be tricky to fit where you need it.
-
you should be ok if you can get it to go up with that much weight as long as you keep every thing even and not just hit on corner
-
I would no risk it

Ok, after a little time off from the upgrade, Im ready to get back into this. I need to get the doors and hood built quick before I host the May meeting. To refresh, heres my list of upgrades. Strikethrough is done or OBE
1. live stock into a temperay holding tank (55G)
11. Paint blackground black
12. Convert from T5 to MH
13. build hood for MH
After the controller is built, implement daily water change system
-
u have 5 more things to do in about 4 weeks ;D
-
Got the first side panel in the clamps glueing
(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi404.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp129%2Fcyberwollf%2F5f4340f1.jpg&hash=ef81938c4649adf77484b0afc4ebf85068f295bc)
-
u going to have it all done by the meeting
-
Hope so. I got the other 2 panels cut, just ran out of glue
-
if u need glue i have a whole thing of it
-
Here's one built. my plan is to make the other and just glue them together and have it as one big magnetic removable panel so I dont have to mess with hinges... Starting to second guess the idea though.. suggestions?
(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi404.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp129%2Fcyberwollf%2F19f0d4af.jpg&hash=727997497c9510f7c4ec8fb6937d36fb6c0506c0)
-
why r u second guessing it for?
-
Im not sure how much of a hastle it will be to just have a huge panel..... And am i actually going to put it back on after i open it? i think doors would be nice, but thats an extra $20 on hindges...
-
just do 2 small panels with the magnets
-
Wes I think the hindges I used were $5 for a pck of 2 Ill check when I go back to menards
-
If you went through this much trouble already, what is an extra 20 for hinges? Might as well do it.
-
Do you already have the magnets? I think I'd go hinges
-
I dont have the magnets yet, but the way i have other panels next to each other, Id have to use euro hinges so it would open out a little instead of just swing open
-
wes I may have some left over from my old stand I will look if i do they are yours
-
ouch that sucks
-
This is what it would look like skinned
(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi404.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp129%2Fcyberwollf%2Ffinished.jpg&hash=5c8080717308ec0adb5d8ef57def636a7504f26e)
I was also planning to go with a dark stain, but I decided to go with paint to save on cheaper wood. My new idea is more of white panels with black trim, which matches my tank trim. ever seen a white and black setup?
(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi404.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp129%2Fcyberwollf%2Ffinishedv2.jpg&hash=00e07dfdc2edf80f823e455dd6b717393dbfb5a6)

I just HAD to unclamp the 2nd panel and lean it inplace before i went to bed ;D

-
Very nice Wes. Looking forward to seeing all your DIY stuff at the meeting.
-
Well... The wife vetoed the white and black. ;D She had a good idea, Darker brown trim with lighter beige panels.
-
I kinda surprised that Wes BOUGHT a house as opposed to making it outta PVC and Visqueen. I assume his wife played some part in all that :)
-
that looks great i like the idea of a 2 tone look
-
I got 3 more panels gluing now. That will finish the canopy front and side. I just need to start the vertical storage cabinet now
-

I just leaned the canopy panels up in place. I now have to devise some kind of setup to hinge the lid open

Lookin Good!

looks great
-
Well done Wes, you wood work much better than you solder ;)
-
Nicely done Wes
-
And better than we cut acyrlic. I have a REALLY sharp butter knife I use for wood :)
-
try a steak knife :D
-
And better than we cut acyrlic. I have a REALLY sharp butter knife I use for wood :)
Hehehe.
-
I got the rest of the wood to finish the vertical cabinet, but havent got around to it. I did order some parts today :) you'll see an older thread get updated tonight (hint) :)
-
Got the vertical cabinet panels done today, Heading to lowes to get some paint and then to Coral Ranch to see what they got. Picks when I return
-
cool cant wait to see
-
Wes, I can't believe you did anything productive today let alone use power tools after last night... :drink
-
The only thing i dont like is the vertical cabinet is too big, its out of proportions with the tank, makes the tank look small

the cheap wood didnt come out too bad, Im actually thinking about sanding it and test staining one a dark cherry color
-
no the cabnet looks great i think
are u going to put anything over the top to block the light ?
-
Havent decided yet, Im still getting used to the hood. the tank used to light the whole room, now its pretty dim.
-
I think the brightness of the tank makes the side cabinet disappear. You are just used to nothing there. I don't think it makes the tank look smaller. But I have no sense of style or interior design, so take it for what its worth.... a few electrons at most.
- rayk
-
I love the look Wes, proportions seem perfect in the picture.
-
It looks awesome Wes!
-
Wow, what a change!! Nice job, Wes.
-
Ok, After some months of being lazy, and just doing normal maintenance, Im getting back into the upgrade. I have been busy painting our entire upstairs and finishing a shoe rack for the wife (that I started before winter ::))
Almost done. Gotta finish monting the shelves.
(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi404.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp129%2Fcyberwollf%2Fc9a93640.jpg&hash=11635a5cd54f6185475227386f454b42ebc70597)
The skin is in the garage getting stained (finally ::)) I Always intended to use the space to the left of the tank for vertical storage. I mounted a 2nd shelf today. I have 5 gallons of RO for ATO (bottom) and now I will have 5 gallons of Kalk to drip. I figure about 1 second a drip will be about a gallon a day, which is about 10 ppm CAL on my 80 gallon system.

this shelf is just tacked in place with screws until i decide exactly what i want to have on the shelves.

How come you are dripping Kalk from a 5g bucket instead of the reactor?
-
I've burnt through 3 impellers on the mj1200 mixing pump! you can see the reactor in the picture to the left of the sump. I can better monitor exactly how much kalk im dosing now instead of just adding a 1/2 cup every month or so to the reactor.

looken good
-
Oh thats right I remember that now.

Ok got one other project about finished, need to dab some stain on the shelf mounts. Im still staining my stand skin.

shoe rack looks good

It looks really nice Wes, great use of space! I like the dark stain. Trendy.
-
As i posted in the controller thread. Temp is back within a reasonable range and yesterday was a fluke.
I tested for the first time in months a few days ago and noticed my mag was 850!!! I have been dosing magflake and epsom salt since then and now am up to 1000. Should be back up to 1300 by this weekend. I put a coat of poly on the rest of the skin today and should be ready for tank picture tomorrow.
-
thats good to hear cant wait to see
-
LOL always test with another test kit. I was adding alot of mag and it was not testing much higher. I had walltank test my mag with an ELOS kit and it tested at 1700. looks like im good to go lol. thanks Paul

So i reported in to school yesterday and they told me the next thing on the schedule is Wed. Gotta love the Air Force. So i got some time to work on the tank. Something that has always bugged me about the tank, it is about 1/4" low on one side so the coast to coast calfo on skims on one side. I plan on draining the sump and about 1/2-2/3 of the DT water and jacking up the left side and putting some 1/4" plywood under the feet. Anyone close got a jack and some free time today :)

That was easier than i thought. Didnt even drain any water. Just jacked up the corner and was done in less than 5 mins.
And I got the plumbing done to run the skimmer from my overflow, soon as the skimmer part comes in.

Not sure, so far the tracking just says "accepted" :) We'll see

Took some catching up, but it all looks real nice. Bet Becca loves her new shoe rack!
I've been having low mag problems too. I wonder how many people do and don't know it?

Tons! Lots of people don't test for it. The test is alot harder to do than the API kits that most people use. But no worse than any other high end kit.

Yea it does kinda suck, but now I have plenty of time to plan a new tank after we move. either a Large shark tank, or an upscale small rimless sps tank.
-
ether one would be sweet
-
Or BOTH!!!
-
Hey, we were sad at first when we seen this, but then we realized. In less than a year, you will only be 2 hours away from us, and it made us feel better, lol :party0040:
-
Hey, Wes, sad to see this tank go. It was a labor of love. Even sadder that you are leaving us soon... Onward and upward, though!
-
Wes, sad to see you leave but I know its for the best. Good luck on your new tank setup.
