Title: mini anemones
Post by: UD Flyer on April 06, 2010, 20:43:38
Does anyone have experience with these? Some of the colors are brilliant and their size makes them perfect for nano's.

Is the care the same as their larger counter parts? DO they reproduce often or slow growers? Will clownfish host them or they too small for clownfish?

which species are you refereing to?  That will probably help with the clownfish questions etc.

not sure of any scientific names but heres a picture of one:

I would like a Blue and red but if they require MH, I'll have to wait a month or so.

Be careful. Many of the mini anemones are cooler water species.

How do I know the difference? It seems they're relatively new and not much is known about them or they're super rare which reflects the price.

I think you're right. I'll have to get to a computer to make a better post, but i yeah, most of them aren't suitable for normal reef environments. I'll post more later.

Found this cool article on some that sound reef tank friendly.  But, I don't know how reputable the source is.

It seems the vast majority are cold watered. They also appear to be much "stickier" than most anemones and kill more nano sized fish than the larger nems. It looks like their too small for clownfish to host and a few places talked about them killing clownfish so thats out of the question.

Yea, their definitely interesting but seem they should be kept in a species only tank. There are people on nanoreef that have kept them somewhat successfully. They seem to multiply quickly, so an initial huge investment from Atlantis could make a nice little species only tank and pay for itself if the offspring are sold.

I have several mini carpet anemone's. They stay small, about the size of a nickel to quarter, fairly good growers (split about every other month). Seem to be harmless to other corals. They love to snuggle in between zoanthids or other corals neither of which seem to be apparent of each other. Mine came from Rosebud at the CORA swap. This is her picture.

I don't have any pics of mine, but they look like the pic that lazy posted. I started out with 2 from the cinci swap, and now I have 5. Also, my fifth one is in the process of splitting again. They are by far the stickiest little things. If I put a finger on it while it is attached to a small rock it sticks, and I can lift it and the rock. They are strong, and I don't really have to do anything to take care of them. They feed with everyone else when I mix everything in, and as of yet, I have never seen anything host in one. They are too small for the clowns that I have.

No, I actually got mine from a vendor. When you walked in, he was the 2nd vendor on the far wall, and to the left of Rich and the guys. ( Left if you are looking at them.)

those are cool do they walk around like other anemones     have they stung any corals ?

I have seen them travel around to different spots, but they have never stung anything. There was one nestled in with some zoas for a while, and I saw one on the side of my frag rack when I had it in there. They seem to agree with everything just fine, and so far, I have not seen any problems.

Good luck finding them Josh, they are small and have a tendency to roam around. There may be one on the Purple People Eater zoa plug.
