Our 2:30 AM wake up call
« on: February 27, 2011, 11:04:31 »
So last night we went to bed kind of late, but I couldn't sleep. (Hubby did not have that problem since he worked all day yesterday.) At about 2:30 this morning I went out to get something to drink, and I noticed that the tank was making a really strange sound. It was really loud, which is not normal, so I went to check it out. The return pump is blowing air into the tank, and the floor is wet. :o I wake up hubby, poor guy needs sleep, and we went out to fix whatever is wrong. He shut down the pumps, and tried to investigate the sump to make sure it hadn't cracked, but that was not it. When he opened the top of the tank, there was water on the back and the middle support brace. Turned the pump back on and water in the main tank was filling up  and ready to overflow again. It had already emptied 7 gallons of top-off water into the tank.  :'(
We completely tore apart the Durso Standpipe to find that one of those stupid turbo snails had gotten himself sucked in and was clogging it up. After about 10 minutes, we fianlly worked him free, since he was lodged in there pretty good, and put him in the sump. We stayed up another half hour to make sure that it wasn't going to do anything else. Tank is fine now, however my newly carpeted living room has about 8 gallons of water in it. *Sigh

I have a custom Durso Standpipe for that reason.  The inlet is a 1-1/4 piece of PVC about 6" long with 3/8" holes drilled in it.   Anything that gets through the holes goes safely down.

At least you had a little insomnia :-\

The turbo snail is about the size of a very large jawbreaker. It went down the Durso but got stuck at the bulkhead. And yes, thank God for my insomnia some nights, lol.
