Peppermint shrimp
« on: November 29, 2011, 17:07:23 »
I recently bought 6 peppermint shrimp to try to help curb the aiptasia I have in my tank.  I only see one of them though, Im geussing they are nocturnal?  Do they feed at night?  I havent noticed a decline in aiptasia but it has only been since sunday.

Yep, they really prefer to come out at night... And they can hide very well... I had 3 at one point and could only ever find 1

Speaking of which, I need to see if I can find mine....   I forgot about them.

There are 2 varieties of shrimp that are sold as peppermints, one does and one does not eat aptasia.   Of the ones that eat aptasia, I have found that they only prefer the very small ones, won't touch larger ones.

Mine hid at first but now come out regularly.  They like to hang upside down under rocks.  The aptasia slowly disappeared from my tank.

Once you find out where they hide, you can put your hand in and they will 'clean' your fingers.  Kids think it is hilarious.

Every couple of summers, we go down to the Port Aransas, TX Jetty to collect peppermint shrimp. If you take your shoes off and put your feet against the rocks, they'll come tickle your feet, 'cleaning' them.

Since the introduction the the Berghi Nudibranch, i thought that they had died and my aiptasia that i had been smashing to repopulate the tank so they could keep feeding had started to take back over. Well last night Angie came and got me to show me that she found one of the nudibranches. I'm excited, hopefully that means they will start to populate again and kill those anemonies. We only spotted one, so not sure if there are any others, but they only come out at night, and it must be eating well because its a fat one, at least 1 inch in length. So I'm hopping that i'll get some babies soon and can pass along a few to some with aiptasia issues as well. Depending on how fast they breed and if i can sustain them.

Before you go the CBB route, gather some data from a few more folks here.  They have quite a bit of background info on them.

Since getting rid of the kliens, I have aptasia popping up all over the tank!  If you can successfully breed them that would be great!

Im gonna try to, but the hard part is finding them, i have only seen the one and i havent seen it since. And it was pretty big, over an inch, and hopefully that means that soon they will have some babies in there IF that wasnt the only one left and then trying to catch them should be fun since they only come out at night....

It does, especially when you're over here helping with a couple of brews
