Miter Saw
« on: December 11, 2011, 17:24:33 »
My brother in-law works in construction (handy man) He came over and helped me build (well he built it I watched) a three level bunk-bed castle for my girls.

While using his Miter saw to cut 2x6" it couldnt cut all the way through it (cant remember why he said but he said it was due to his crappy saw).  He had to stop and flip the board over to finish the last 1/2" or 1/4" of cutting it

Anyway if I were to buy him one what are some key things I should look for?

I bought a Ryobi 10" compound slider. It will cut up to a 12" wide board. I don't remember the max thickness but I know the saw was around $200. It works great for the home user the laser light doesn't work well but I never use them anyway.  I believe the only place that carries them is home depot.

If you got money to blow go dewalt. I think its about 100+ more than the Ryobi. There are local service centers in the dayton area the do repair work on them when something breaks.

If you want top notch, very precise go with a Mikita slider. They are awesome but hold on to your wallet. I did some research on them 2 years ago and the 12" slider was quite a bit more than the dewalt.

If he can not get through a 2X6 it is a 10 inch saw.  I would highly recommend to anyone looking to get a mitre saw to get a 12 incher, it makes a world of difference.  In fact, if it is in your budget, get a 12 incher on a slide.  I got mine at Home Depot, it was about $500.  There seems to be some decent ones on the cheap at Harbor Freight too.

Low cost option:

Preferred options:

(this is the one I have)

They are a lot of money, but will last you a lifetime.

Hope this helps...

This is the new version of what I run. Unless you are doing large crown molding or really thick wood, a 10" slider will work for most back yard builders.

FYI anyone looking for a nice drill/driver set I just bought this set form Lowes. So far I really like them. Fairly cheap price on a combo kit.

heres another that i have, http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00922010000P?sid=IDx20070921x00003a&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=00922010000

I bought this one because they were having a sale on it last year, it can cut over 26" sections if i remember correctly.

I build a lot of things, so if you just do some things here and there, i would recommend something a bit cheaper.

A 10" will work for almost everyone for most all jobs.... But if you are buying him a new one... he already has a <=10"...

Gettling a larger diameter blade would be the only way to cut a thicker piece of wood in a single cut pass...

Having to turn over the wood to make a second pass does not mean it is a crappy saw...

I apologize I misread this, I thought you were cutting 6 inch thick beams... derrrrrr that's what I get for not reading. A sliding saw as mentioned will work for what you wanted... I thought he was having trouble cutting the main support posts for the bed or something... I see now you said 2x6 and not 6x6

I received an email from them (Harbor Freight) yesterday. The sliding compound miter saw is on sale for $79.99 with coupon 43299401. Here's the link from the email --> http://widgets.harborfreight.com/wswidgets/common/displayCoupon.do?hdr=mag&week=5011&campaign=a&page=5011a_retail.html&cust=78161356897&keycode=1002

The coupon for the saw is on the second row up from the bottom. Hope it helps some.

Almost all harbor freight power tools come with a 90 day warranty....they offer a 1 or 2 year warranty for an extra $20 or so. Might be worth it especially if he plans on using it a lot.
