Sun coral questions!!!
« on: April 14, 2013, 20:09:08 »
I picked up a large frag of sun corals from gerber's this afternoon.
There r at least 20 heads and they were pretty happy when I bought them.
When I got home, I accidently dropped it on the ground!!!! None of the stoney parts r broken, but it's been 6 hours, they r still not opening!!! I'm a little worried. Cuz people r saying sun corals r very fragile.
Also, they require low lights. Will it hurt them if the lights r not "low enough"?
I have only one dark spot available, but not sure if that spot is dark enough for them!!!..?
Will post pic later, anyone know well about sun corals??.

Those are actually best in very low light like on the underside of a rock like if you have a cave the can be put in there or mounted upside down in at the mouth of the cave.  I'm sure if you droped them it didn't hurt it much not enough to completely kill it.  Give it time. But in high light they will not fully open I believe.  Lazylivin has some he can help you more.

+1 to all the above.. and be prepared to target feed them if you really want them to thrive.

I would slide them back a bit more in the hole if possible your lighting looks very bright. Push them back if they open all the way up in a day then they will be good. If not slide then up alittle. I would kinda let it kinda extend its self to find its amount of desired light.  I also did read that it won't grow much on the sand. Seems the flesh is very delicate to sand.

Here is a great site about suncorals.

Another page I think u must read about feeding and lighting. This guys has no lighting on his suncoral tank because they do not require lighting.

Good. Glad you like.  I'm kinda new to saltwater reefs and such but I educate myself everynight. I'm so addicted that I read for hours everynight about anything to do with reef tanks. My wife thinks I'm crazy lol.     So even though I'm new my knowledge is pretty large due to the good old internet lol.   Hope your suncorals do great. I plan to get some myself. Just waiting on the on just the right piece.

I have 2 sun corals both are out in the open. I have one on a small rich on the  sand bed & one on the side of a rock. Both are out in the the open both are in direct light. Both do fine & have for some time now. I have them in a high flow area, on the other side of the tank I have a power head that blows that direction. When I feed the power head blows food right to both of them. I may be the exception to the rule, but this is what has been working for me.

I have a big piece that has been in the tank for a month or two. I've kept it in a cave, and out in the open and had no luck with it.

Will try the high flow placement as you've mentioned.

Thanks for the information.
I'm setting up another 75, I will find a good place for him.
My engineer goby messed him up today!!!! OMG I hate goby so much.
Then I putted him on a small rock. The polyps came out a little bit but not full open.

You can't blast them tho. My tank is 6 foot long and the powerhead is on one side & the sunnies are on the other. So they get a strong but gental current.
