Maxspect Gyre XF150
« on: November 17, 2014, 19:46:44 »
I decided to jump on the early adopters and order a Gyre pump.  I've been running this for 5 days on my 180 gallon tank.

The XF150 is the middle sized pump in the trio of pumps planned to be released.  The pump is rated up to 5000gph.  On glass or acrylic aquariums upto 3/4" thick(This is truely the limit without ordering a re-inforcement kit)   The pump is being distributed in the USA by CoralVue, they are handling service and support for this product.

The pump comes with a simple controller that has 2 buttons and a thumb wheel.  There are 4 modes of operation.
-Constant Current  (10-100% in forward or reverse)
-Pulse (Max Flow and Timer)   The Timer can be set as low as .4 up to 30 seconds.  This is your wave mode if you want it.
-Alternating.  (Will run forward and then reverse at 2 settable speeds for a set time duration of 2min to 12hr)
-Feed Mode

The current controller has no external interfacing capability, but since the controller has connectors on the incoming and pump output, in could be easily upgraded later on when something else is available.  There is planned for more sophisticated control down the road.

The pump is packaged very nicely, and has a full set of replacement rotors and bearings.   This single pump is more than enough flow on my 180 gallons, and I'm only running the pump at 60%.  At 60% output, the pump has much more flow than my Vortech MP40 at 100% and it covers a much wider area.  But I'm leaving one of my Vortech MP40s on for a little more randomization, counter flow, and the battery backup.

So far so good.

Here are a couple of images.

Very nice. I think I'll have to wait until the smaller version come out though. Thanks for sharing.

Looks like a nice small footprint inside the tank.  Its cool you can run it so close to the surface of the water and not cause a cyclone from pulling from the surface.

Still liking this pump?

do you notice a difference in your corals with the gyre?  I always thought random water movement was preferred over a continual circular motion

So far I this the pump is an improvement.  Some corals have more polyp extension.  Definately less dead spots.  I left a vortech mp40 in for randomness.  Plus, the gyre in pulse mode creates change in flow.

That thing is cool!

Been watching a bunch of videos on the pumps and they seem quite impressive.  Lots of flow in a not so bulky enclosure...

Might need to snag one of them one of these days...

I won one of these in the year end Ohio Reef raffle Saturday. Installed it Saturday night so I've only had it up and running for a day and half.
So far I really like it. The intake footprint is tiny. I have it mounted at the very top of the tank, about an inch and a half below the surface. It is barely noticiable from the front of the tank. About the size of a half-dollar.  It is a bit noisy at the higher RPM. If you're coming from a Vortech it probably won't bother you but if you are using any other type of pump and you're used to the quietness you may dislike the noise. below 50% it is just fine. 80% -100% is Loud! However at that speed the amount of flow is insane. If you need that kind of flow you may want to wait for the larger Gyre to come out. I think the 5000gph max is conservative, if I had to guess I would say it's at least 8000gph. I'm running about 50% speed and it does a good job.

After three weeks of the Gyre in the tank I had to pull it out. Nothing at all wrong with the pump. I like it and all the features it has. The reason I had to take it out is all my staghorn corals that were in it's direct path were loosing tissue from the pumps current. The corals are at the top of the tank and some coming out of the water the slightest bit. The Gyre's current runs across the whole top 3" of the tank. No matter how I position it the current has direct flow against a coral. In tanks where corals are less then 3"-4" from water surface the Gyre would work fine. I moved it to the basement frag tank where it is doing an excellent job. That tank is bare bottom and has a frag rack that is 5" off the tank floor. This allows the Gyre to be mounted at the bottom of the tank and move the current underneath the frag rack. I can also use the Gyre at full power in that tank

The currently availiable pump is too big( or way overkill) for a 75 gallon.  There is supposed to be a smaller version made soon.

Did you try it standing on its end, vertical? This would make the flow circle the tank and should be easier on the waters surface.

For those waiting for the smaller XF130.   That is supposed to be available this month.  Aquarium Artisans is already accepting pre-orders.

I could do that in front of the tank but for me the innovativeness of the pump is that it only shows about size of half dollar in tank when installed horizontally. Vertically I would have a 12" long pump showing affecting the aesthetics of the tank. I like the look of seeing just livestock opposed to equipment.

I could see that. I am going to have to get the smaller one for my project for sure.
I'm sure it's turning that frag tank over good though.
