FishBit Beta Unit
« on: December 16, 2015, 22:31:18 »
Well, it's official. The unit I'm supposed to test is on its way. I'll be picking it apart and posting my honest opinions of it. Hopefully, I'll be able to do a video or two of the setup and such.

If anyone has an iPod Touch they aren't using, I'd be interested in buying it from you. It needs to be at least 4th generation, I believe.

I'll keep you posted.

Looking forward to this. I missed the beta timeline. Still gave them some $. Seems like it should be a good product.

Well, I ran into a bit of a snag. I got a 4th generation iPod Touch thinking it would work. Come to find out I need a minimum of an iPhone 4s or a 5th generation iPod Touch.
The iOS version won't go high enough on the 4th generation Touch.

Quick update.

The unit I received had some power issues so I was unable to use it. The replacement monitor and controller are on their way and should be here by Monday or Tuesday.

As of right now, they're planning on a February launch.

After some minor connection issues, I was finally able to get both pieces connected.

Here are some shots of the interface. I need to verify the salinity reading with my refractotometer.

Well, here's a review. Sorry it's not more complete. If anyone has any questions, please ask. I'll do my best to answer or get one.

Currently, the monitor tests for pH, salinity and temperature. The controller has six outlets which can be controlled individually, either manually or automatically. Each can be set to come on and off with either of the three parameters the monitor tests or by the time of day.

Set up, for me took a little while to complete because me router didn't want to cooperate. I had to reset it to get either device to connect. After that, it went extremely smoothly. Other than a few disconnects, it's been working flawlessly.

To date, the only interface available for FishBit is on an Apple device. For the next version, an Android app should be available.

What drew me to the FishBit is the nice, unobtrusive design of the monitor. It doesn't interfere with the aesthetics of the layout of your tank, at all. I'll get a picture of the monitor in my tank so you can see for yourself.

I'd like to thank Nate Carl and Alex Uribe, from Current Labs, for agreeing to allow me to do a test run.

All of the initial Early Bird Specials have been sold out. They've added an additional 25 Early Specials, if anyone is interested.
