Bulkhead Question?
« on: July 15, 2008, 23:09:53 »
Hello all, I am almost ready to start setting up the 50 gallon, and was wondering about the bulkhead installation. My question is for the sake of easy removal down the road would I be able to install the bulkhead with the flat side, and the rubber gasket on the outside of the tank without the threat of leaks? My thinking on this is that when the plumbing is all glue together I would not be able to slide the bulkhead out. Let me know what ya'll think. Thanks, and God bless.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter which way you install it as long as the gasket is on the flat side.  The gasket sandwhiched between the glass and the flange is your seal.

Having said that, I could see it maybe making a difference on a much larger tank.  Installed with the flat side in, the gasket is compressed by the water pressure pushing against the flange.  Turned around, it might somehow decompress slightly??  Probably have to be a really big tank for any type of effect to be seen.

So I will be able to put the threaded side inward as long as I have the gasket between the outside of the tank, and the flange. Thanks alot Scott.

If it's inside your overflow box than having the threaded side in and the flange side out will be fine. Make sure the gasket in on the flange side and not the nut.
