Fun new Toys! - Aqua-Mags "Frag-Mags"
« on: September 24, 2008, 12:16:14 »
http://www.aqua-mags.com/index.php

Okay, so I'm excited.  I just bought 6 of these (2 packs of 3).  I haven't decided what all needs to go on them right now, but I got one mounted.

My firts mount is a very small frag of a hammer coral that had sort of broken away from another head.  I really thought it was just dead flesh, but within a few days, it had started growing.  So, it's on the "Frag-Mag" now.

Cool idea, and I'll be experimenting with the rest.  But it allows you to move a coral around, hold it securely in place, and change the flow/lighting without disturbing the rest of the tank.

If anyone wants to order some (like, just one or two, or something), let me know, and I can order some before the next meeting...  we can split the shipping, and if you just want to try one, you can do so without buying 3 of them.

I'll try to have pics in the next day or so.

I actually saw a pic of someone using that for a monti cap.  I want a cap but have nowhere I feel confident about putting it in my tank, so I may try one of those for it.

I'd have to do it on the side in my tank, though.  The backwall is direct light from the 250W MH (which I think would brown it out) and that's also super-high flow.  I saw some neat things done with acros as well.  What about a toadstool?

That would be sweet to have a good sized toadstool look like it is growing off the side of your tank.

Ummm... I had a thought.  All we need are some reef safe magnets (rubber coated) some the material to make plugs.  Dip the top and sides of one magnet in the concrete or whatever plug material you use.  Let it setup and then there you go. It would work for hanging stuff on the side or back glass.

The problem with making your own are purchasing the magnets.  They have to be neodymium rare earth magnets in order to hold that sort of weight.  They aren't cheap...so by the time you buy those and make the frag plugs, you're looking at almost the same cost.

I looked at DIY mag-frag-plugs last year, and it wasn't cost effective unless you buy in extreme bulk.  The price of neodymium may have come down since.  Might look into it again.

I haven't, but when I go buy some frags off Slandis... I will swing in and see what they have to offer.  Unless he does first and reports in!  ;) ;D

Easiest and cheapest way to get this type of magnet is from a hard-drive.  If you have an old hard-drive lying around and some extra time, and torx bits get to work.  I once had to take apart about 100 drives.  I kept most of the magnets and may have a few left, I gave most to other co-workers to give to thier kids to play with (snap-ouch-Mommy!!!!! my fingers) Some magnets, reef safe silicone, and frag plug mix, hmmmmmmmm.

<puts on work hat, and steps onto soap box>

You should never throw away or leave a hard-drive in a PC, the data can be recovered even if you wipe it.... There are commercial tools that can go back several layers and other non-comercial tools that can go back nearly 7 to 9.  If you are getting rid or selling a PC take out the Hard-drive and beat the $h!t out of it with a hammer while wearing safety glasses, or drill multiple holes though it.....

I know I'm bringing up an old thread, but, did anyone buy these? Or previously have them?

Are all you IT geeks the same?   I have another IT Geek friend (what does that say about me?) that has an entire rack server in his basement just to run his family photo webpage. I do have to say he has the fastest PC (should be PCs) and internet of any I've ever used.

I hope your friends family members are kicking in on the elec bill to run that rack!!!  I don't have a rack but would like to digitize my DVD collection so that I can pull up and play whatever I want from any PC or TV at any time.  The audio and photo collections are in, but I don't have the space for the movies yet.  If HP would give a better discount, or if this reef addiction didn't cost so much $$$, I'd jump on 1 of their media servers.

Geeking... I know!  Trying to quit.  On the patch but it's not workin...  ;)

I purchased a mivx box ( http://www.mvixusa.com/ ) from Microcenter down in Cincinnati to store mine on. The system itself was $150 or so and I stuck a 500GB drive in it (but it supports 1TB+) for another $150 (its been awhile so my prices my be off). I can either copy the dvd onto it directly (takes approx 4 gigs) or convert into divx or another supported media format. The box plugs into my computer using USB2 (for transferring data) and then plugs into the tv using a variety of connections but I use the composite cables (not that big of a new-tekkie). Works great for what I use it for.
