cora closing their posts
« on: February 24, 2009, 18:20:47 »
I went to cora's (columbus reef club) web site tonight and see that they are closing their forum to new posts from any non members.  Just curious how everyone thought about this.  Maybe I am wrong but I dont feel that this is right.  I understand the support of the local club but locking others out I dont think it good for information exchange.

I didn't see that, where does it say the forum is / will be for members only?

I did see where they are changing the buy and sell rules and limiting them to members only.

Jake, I noticed you're posting, and you're not a member.  ;)

We keep certain things to "members only" that have to do with the running of the club, and special sponsor deals that only paid members get.  We keep the reef discussion out in the open for all to read and hear.  Certain things definitely need to be "members only", but I personally don't think an entire forum should be member's only...but it's their club.  CORA and Ohio Reef have a good long-standing relationship, and if they feel that's what is best for their club, then so be it.

Now, if the buy and sell rules changed, I can definitely understand that.  We often have people join our forum just to sell some stuff, and never come back.  We've had people sell things that shouldn't have been sold...and had no way to deter them from doing it again.  Keeping the buy/sell forum as members only would help prevent bad sales.  But, we don't do that b/c we feel that our members can sometimes benefit from non-member sales (like people leaving the hobby.)

I just checked their website...and they're making to where non-members can't post new threads in the buy/sell area, but they can reply.  Makes sense to me.

I started over there a few months ago. I'm not sure if I really got much of a great vibe on there. The little I've been reading on here so far, it seems more my "style" just a better vibe.

Ohio Reef ROCKS! I enjoy the club more then the hobby. It wouldn't be as fun if I did have anyone to share it with!

I completely disagree

Yes it does!!! I’ve mentioned this before but this is the only site I post on simply because of the people. Very open minded people who don’t think their view is the only view.

And if CORA wants to do this, more power to them. It’s a free market society, if someone doesn’t like it, don’t patron their site.

My bad.  I did fail to notice that it was the for sale and for trade forums that will be closed to non-members.
I do agree with the others that this Ohio Reef is a great site.  Kindof feels like home.

The people on this site are what made me stay with the hobby, tank crash after tank crash.  In fact, one of the people I met through this hobby is now one of my bridesmaids.  :)  There are really some awesome people on here.

Especially if the patronage is just a cheap shot negative comment about the club and it's web site.

what cheap shot negative comment?  I think that it is a given that some people feel more comfortable with one group of hobbiest over another.  No slam against them, just how someone feels more comfortable with one site over another.

Dude your just as negative as me you think I've never talked to you.lol chill out .besides the fact It wasn't ment to be the way your taking it.

I could see a need for what they did after the full story it makes sense really. It will help strengthen the club you'd have to think. For the record this is a great club I don't think badly because they charge.I get it.I know I'm cheap and people are turned off by me speaking my mind. I mean no harm though its just my nature

I completely agree with the free market thing clubs will make it and not make it  thus is life and as Jsleedy pointed out, we are doomed for socialism scary really.

Come on man it's only $10.  You will make that back in sponsor sales and discounts in no time.  Plus like you said it's a great club.  Help keep it a great club. :)

I know it seems ridiculous ,but its principle to me not the money. Point at hand I have a few frags I'm gonna sell and I haven't posted them simply because I am not a paying member and I have already sold a few things in here (as well as bought) and I honestly didn't feel like it would be cool on my part to frequently sell things with out paying. I'm not trying to get something for nothing I just see it differently is all. And that's truth. I

This club is going to make it there will be no stopping that. Besides that I do spend money $100's of dollars just like everyone else at the local coral shops that sponsor so counts for something. at least in my mind

Don't take it the wrong way but what is the "principle" the keeps you from joing?  I truely am interested in you reasoning.  I think it's really fascinating to undestand different points of view on the same subject.  I guess it's a hang over from to many sociology and psychology classes.

I work in downtown Cincinnati but live up in Dayton. If you ever want to get anything in one of Joel's biitb specials, just let me know and I'll pick it up for you. We'll have to work out a time on Tuesday to drop it off but I don't mind being the go between on something like that. Ofcourse, we can't leave it in the bag which means they'll be acclimated to my QT tank, but that shouldn't hurt anything overnight. Then again, if a fish croaks overnight....I can't be held responsible for that either, but so far (knock on wood) all mine have worked out great.

No hang ups on you joining or not.  Just curious about the human mind.  I will say one last thing on the subject. Keep in mind the club is non profit and has operating cost to keep this site up and running.  I have never been to a meeting and don't really plan on going to one.  With the exception of the March meeting.  I think Joel will be sharing some very good ideas.  I joined for the simple fact.  I have recieved a lot of good advice met a lot of nice people and I get the fact that running this isn't free.  I simply see joing as a way to help insure this wealth of information doesn't go away.  Having said that I will retire from this thread.  Thanks for the entertaining dialog.
