increasing mag
« on: May 29, 2009, 22:05:49 »
Is there an additive that I am able to add to my ca reactor that will help out with keeping my mag level up?  I seem to have to keep adding mag flakes to keep even a level of 1200.
Thanks
Jeff

Mg is used in fairly low increments compared to others.  There is media you can put in a calcium reactor, but I have not used it.   The two I have read about are Dolomite and the Zeo Mg granules.

Are you using straight Mag Flakes?  I've not used this either, but the recipies call for epsom salts in combination with Mag Flake.   For what little I dose, I still have some ESV Mg around.

Also, check your test kits.  My salifert kits always read lower than ELOS.  The Elos readings tracked well with the amount of Mg I was adding, where as the Salifert didn't seem to move much.

I've also read about the Dolomite and Zeo Mg with conficting stories about them.  You are supposed to put a small layer of one of them on top of your Ca media and they will release Mg.  One of the online articles said they would not disolve until you had a pH of around 6ish in your reactor so they would not really work.  Or if it did work, it would not be of much benefit.   Another forum (Maybe PA's forum on CORA?) had someone asking for Dolomite because the Zeo Mg was not of a good quality anymore.

I  test my mg level with a sea chem kit.  I have never seemed to get above 1200 in my tank.  I also have  no coraline growth on my glass which leads me to wonder if something isnt at the right level in my water.  Ca and alk are both good, that is why I have always suspected my mg level.  I have been adding a mag suppliment that I got from bulk reef supply of which I am almost out of.  I am also ready to add media to my reactor.  I will read up on the links you have posted.
Thanks
Jeff

I've had no problem raising my Mg in the SeaChem salt.  I just do it after I've mixed up a new batch.  Easily gotten it to 1350.

How many mL of the mag flake solution are you adding? When I was raising my mg 200 points I had to add like 600+ mL of Kent Tech M. Usually it takes a crazy amount to boost it then it is stable for awhile. Sorry I do not know anything you could add to your reactor to boost mg.
