Seahare Eats Cyano - pics to prove!
« on: September 22, 2009, 19:25:20 »
Warning:  if gruesome tank photos ruin your appetite, don't look

I got another seahare this past Saturday - cute little green monster.  He's earned his keep already by eating sheets of cyano off the back glass.  I've sure never heard of them doing this:

How did I let it get this bad, you ask?  Truth is, I'm waiting to siphon out the worst of this junk til I get my new RO system, because it's going to require a major water replacement.  He started around the base of the Koralia...

You can see how he has cleared an entire space.  Good seahare!!

(Of course it looks better now - I got in there Sunday night with scraper and net to catch the worst of it)

Oh yeah, they rock. I had some weird algae growing, kind of a light brown, its nearly gone. Conch's eat Cyano also, atleast from the sand bed.

Yeah, they primarily eat hair algae, but eat a variety of other algaes too. Love the sea hare!  ;)

So where did you get this guy and what did you have to pay for it?

I have some kind of stuff growing and not sure what it is. Its soft, thick, and deep purple. It grew on the bottom of a rock I had in the 90g. Its like a solid sheet of alage.

This sounds alot like cyano. Did it grow on the in underside of a rock? As-in, no exposure to light?

Seahares are some of the best tank additions in my opinion.

I got mine in Troy at Aquatic Specialists. Ugly SOB, but he does great work. Pretty much eats any algae, slime, or goop in his path.

They can typically be quite exspensive (depending on where you go), but I normally keep them for right around $17.00 and will be having them on sale again this weekend for $14.00. I may still have one left....I do. Check out my sales thread they are typically on there.

I got one from Aquatic Specialists a month or so ago. I can definately confirm they mow down hair algea. He buries himself in the sand all day and comes out at night to graze.

Sorry not to help answer questions.  I was super busy before leaving town and have been busier ever since getting back!
We don't see this creature, but he apparently is still doing his work.  And the conchs I got from Justin are also doing a great job on the sand.  I have ZERO cyano in the tank at this point.

I will say for the record, he doesn't seem to eat caulerpa of any variety.  I still have way more of that in the display tank than I want, although the crop down in the refugium is healthy and thriving too.

Ray, I hope you got yourself one of these munchers.  They are worth their weight in gold!

Yeah, they are much more active  during the day when there is an over abundance of food. As the sea hare gets it under control it becomes much more nocturnal, conserving energy. I'm glad to hear about the conchs, a lot of people have been very happy with them. They have to be the best creature for sand cleaning that I have came across.

The conchs rock. Almost cleaned up all of Cassies Cyano already.

Ray: I've got one you can have if you'd like. I've got two now and my sand bed has never looked better, but one is enough for upkeep I think. Let me know.
