Klein
« on: July 13, 2011, 11:27:13 »
Has anyone had issues with Klein fish? I read that they will eat soft corals and such, never had one myself so i dont know how aggressive they are towards corals. I want to get one, but if they are going to tear up my tank, i'd rather sell or fry him up. I'm going to build a cage around my clams for sure, just till the klein gets rid of my aipstasia problem. I also have other types of anemonies, with my logic, if they eat aipstasia, i would think that they would eat other types of anemonies as well right?

I have wrote a few comments regarding the kleins, Mine ate all my aiptasia within 2 weeks, and I did notice him nipping at my xenia, only the tips, and never enough to cause harm or reduction in xenia. He left everything else alone, he did eat like a pig and I would recommend feeding him atleast 3 times a day. I would be leary as they are known to eat clams and other invertebrates, and once they have a taste of it(clam) I heard they will never shake it. People have said they will destroy some feather dusters so I pulled my larger ones out for my refgium, however I had some smaller ones that I didn't move and he left them alone. He did an amazing job at cleaning up the aiptasia, and I would highly recomend him for this purpose, but for the clam and other anemone, they might need protection against him IMO.

most anything that effectively clears the aiptasia population is more than likely gonna bash on somehting else in the reef.

This fish was recommended to me by a few other members, neither had anything bad to say about them aside from the occasional aiptasia nipping.

I have had great luck with Kleins eating aptasia they like to eat the tips off xenia and while I have seen them sampling other corals they uaually leave them alone after that. They can certainly do some damage if they decide your corals are better than what you are feeding them so make sure to keep them fed well. The three times a day boonjob recomended is good advice. As far as eating other anemones one out of the four Kleins that came in last week is picking on a green bubble tip anemone.

ok, good to know, i have a rose tip and a long tenticle (pretty huge) that i dont want him nipping at or destroying. The clams will be easy to protect with the cage of eggcrate that i'll make. Just that the anemonies will the the only thing i cant protect directly in that fashion. I havent read anything about them attacking other types of anemonies, but thats good to know Coral Ranch that 1 out of 4 is picking on your bubble tip, so some caution will be needed. I'll do my best to feed 2-3x daily. But I'm thinking that once he cleans out the aiptasia that I'll have to get rid of him.

Update: Klein's from aquatic refuge is doing well! He has ate a few of the smaller aiptasia that were present in my tank already(has been about a week). The larger aiptasia(ones the size of a silver dollar) he has been nipping at to the point where they no longer come out. I have been Feeding him one hefty meal a day as I want him to target the aiptasia(and he is) as the population drops(which it has) I am gonan start supplementing more food.  Really excited for this guy, Not the prettiest fish but not the ugliest! He has taken up the name of picasso in my hosuehold as he has a little but of everything on him striping and color wise.

I will try to update this reguarly

Also added a Bubbletip anemone about 5 days ago, I have yet to notice him nip or pick at it, let alone show any interest.

I have one aptasia in the tank with the kleins and so far I haven't see him touch it.  I have however seen him picking at several of my coral.

I have a CBB in my 150 with a lot of aprasia and so far I "think" I "might" have seen him picking at 1 aptasia.  He is eats well at feeding time though.  :)

Are you over feeding? I have been under feeding kinda forcing him to pick at the rocks for food, I have not noticed mine eating any corals, hopefully you did not get a bad one.

IMO you kinda got to starve em a little to make him pick at the rocks. My tang is that way he won't touch algae if I reguarly feed him but if I miss a meal or two he macks on it.

I'm sure I'm overfeeding, I have a bad habit of doing that.  I have anthias and they need several feedings per day.  Plus I want to make sure my achilles is getting pleanty to eat.  My tangs all eat nori like there is no tomorrow.

Well I hope it works out for you, If not maybe once mine has bullied the aiptasia enough, we could switch up kleins for a bit and see if mine does you any good and I'll give yours the ol boon starving trick! (j/k j/k I really dont starve them(atleast I hope not))

But I would be interested in seeing if the amount of feedings control how quickly they dispense of the aiptasia or how much attention they pay to the rocks for that matter.

LOL, meanie!  I'm guessing they would go for the aptasia/rock more if I fed less.  I have a feeling I'll find out when I go to Florida in 11 days!  I'm sure Randy will not feed nearly as often as I do!  I'll most likely come home to an aptasia free tank!  I just hope I have some coral left!  :D

Haven't seen mine all day, Not sure if he was hiding because of the storms or something else... He was out last night. All other fish are just fine and happy. I have tried feeding, checked the over flow, sump(not that i'd think he'd make it there though), floor, power heads... Guess we will see... Might have to chuck him up as a loss after tomorrow and rip the tank apart for him, make sure he isn't rotting somewhere.

Wondering if he A. he is just hiding(all day and even when I have tore half the tank apart looking for him)... B. He jumped out of my tank and my dog ate him which is why I am not seeing his body on the floor.... or C. he had a bout with the GBTA? My GBTA today after sitting in the same spot for over a week has decided to move, I don't find this so weird as I do that he is about twice his "normal" size and he is now 80% white with green spots(his entire mouth section is now white and it also runs up into his tentacles) as opposed to pure green as he was when i went to bed last night....
