to much flow.... ugh
« on: December 27, 2011, 12:04:58 »
I purchased a red dragon 12m3 for my tank a while ago & after FINALLY turning on the aquarium with the sumps hooked up it's just to much flow.  I ordered a BubbleBlaster 7000 to take it's place, should flow about half of what the Red Dragon does........

I also have two bubble blaster NW pumps, the 3000 & 5000.  Trying to get them dialed in on a old ER skimmer..... Man they suck a LOT of air!!!  The skimmer body is having a hard time keeping up.

Yes, they are quite beastly pumps! I ordered a BB 3000 (didn't do enough research on how radical these pumps really are), and have yet to find a skimmer body that can handle the volume that these pumps put out. The sucking air sound does get old quickly.
Trying to figure out ways to get my 8" skimmer body to handle so much flow. It doesn't help that both the pump and skimmer are almost clean as new.

I swapped between the bb3000  bb5000 on my ER 12-2/rc500 body & the bb5000 does work better.  The 3000 wasn't enough air for the skimmer body it seemed..... however I did have to mess around with the best way to let the water enter the skimmer from the bb pump.  I ended up using a singe T when the water enters the skimmer & sticking a 90 on one end & another 90 on the other.  It worked better having one part of the T going straight in & another to one side (vs both inputs going left & right).  I was able to reduce turbulance the most this way & get a lot fewer bubbles coming out the bottom.

My bb3000 that I purchased from Premium seems to be messed up.  Every 10-20 seconds the pump clanks then pushes a big ball of air out.... then back to normal.  Thus I know it wasn't working 100% when I tried that on my skimmer

This is a safety feature for the BB series of pumps. They have protection circitry that will shut them down (for a split second, or if they are that blocked they shut off totally) if they sense that there isn't enough water going through them.

yea, I thought that's what was causing it but there is zero restriction.

If I hook the pump up where it sucks the water from it's venturi then either T off or just do a single return into my skimmer it keeps cutting off

If I hook up the larger bb5000 the same way except the exh side of this pump gets reduced from 1.25 to 1in it works fine

thus I am thinking something is wrong with it.
