« on: January 07, 2012, 13:01:44 »
Anyone have large amounts of sand that they would like to get rid of for pretty cheap?

Need to fill a 30 gallon tank for a remote deep sand bed

How many pounds (or 5 gallon buckets) of sand would you need?

I need to fill a 30 gallon tank to almost the top (Deep sand bed) as well as a 20 gallon long maybe 6-8", then about another 6-8" for a 20 gallon high.

then sand if I can build my mangrove "racetrack"

so honestly not sure how much sand that is

Keep in mind that dsb and rdsb are both recommended to have sugar fine sand and a high flow rate. The amount of sand you are wanting is enough to filter a tank roughly around the 600 gallon range.

If I remember correctly, 40 lbs of sugar fine argonite is enough to fill a 5 gallon bucket 3/5 of the way. You'd be looking at between 500-700 lbs of sand.

It might be a good idea to look into other alternatives for places that don't require sand (like a turf scrubber or algae).  Most of the benefits of a dsb are more effectively replecated in other ways.

We decided to use mostly organic filtering for our tank and plumbed in a rdsb(so please don't think we are against them) But even its strongest proponents say its not the end all, be all. Save time space and money and look into other alternatives.

IMVHO.

Ps, I'm also aware that I don't know exactly what it is you are going for and have prepaired my foot for mouth insertion if need be.

Why are you trying to go that deep on a DSB? most work fine in the 4-8 range... I think anything over 8 would almost be asking for trouble, as I see it more prone to hold harmful byproduct gasses., just curious

Life is a beach, I'm just playing in the sand.

for the Remote DSB.... I read that it should be anywhere from 8-12" deep.  the DSB will be in a 30 gallon tank that has been painted all black and has an acrylic lid that is painted black to keep out the light.  feed by a maxi jet 1200 with a spray bar and a 1" drain back to the sump and into a filter sock

the two 20 gallon tanks will be a refugium and mangroves (unless i do a mangrove "racetrack")

I also need some sand for my 150 gallon and a 5 gallon tank as well
