Carbon prefilter
« on: January 25, 2012, 09:08:13 »
As some of you may know, the water from our well is pretty bad and it wreaks havoc on our kold steril media. My question is would placing a canister (like you would use for DI) full of ROX carbon as a prefilter for the media be effective or should I look into other alternatives like another carbon sleeve? I'm having a bit of a  :beee: moment with this because we just got brand new filters, and replaced both DI filters and the color changed to rust on the di before we even got close to 550 gallons.

We're already using a carbon sleeve for the house right after the water softener and it's doing a dandy job, but to keep the media safe it falls short. I'm starting to look at this wondering if a 20 stage diy filter would be sufficient. (I'd just take up a whole wall with 20 different canisters 5 each: pads, socks, carbon, di) ::)

Anyhow, hoping to hear of a sane alternative that doesn't involve RO.

We had a very bad problem with our well water when we first set up. Our DI resins were lasting 2-3 weeks. We finally installed an iron filter in the house wich not only removed the iron and other heavy metals it also removed the sulfides. This filter was expensive but on the plus side we were not burning through DI resins and we no longer had to deal with rust stains in the sinks nor that bad smell from the well water. You may be able to find an iron filteer cheaper but we opted to get one that treated all water coming into the house.

I have the same issue.  My PPM of our well water post water softner is 335-355.  I haven't checked it pre-water softner.  I think that I am coming up on about 500 gallons of use and my DI is getting pretty colorful.  I checked my water post-RO/DI the other day and got 9 PPM.

The good thing is that right now I only run about 110g of total water volume in my tank and do occasional water changes.

I'll have to look into the iron filter. Has anyone tried a ROX as a filter?
