Tangs in a 90?
« on: September 03, 2012, 20:08:21 »
I am ready to add a fish or two, Id like to add a couple of tangs.  Any suggestions?

I have a pair of clowns, lawnmower blenny, flame angle and 3 cardnials in there now.  All fish are around 2" or so..  I know a 90 is not "ideal" for tangs but....  The guy I bought my 90 offo f had 4 tangs in there they were nice and seemed to get along.  I was thinking a yellow and hippo??

Yellow is fine, the hippo will be fine when small, but will outgrow the tank.

Any other suggestions?  I do want the yellow but what else??  I know the hippos get pretty big.  Are they slow growers?

I am partial to the bristletooths & kole tangs. They stay on the small size.

I agree, I have a blue eye and he never stops picking at the rock. I also have a yellow, both in a 90.

I think what's mentioned is your best bet

Hippo/hep tang - they do grow kinda fast however they are not active swimmers like powder blues and other types of tangs, should work for many many years

Yellow/purple/scopes/etc grow slow and should work..... Just get a small one

Kole - they stay small and are active grazers...... My yellow eye kole surprisingly has quite the attitude..... Pushes my yellow tangs around the tank

300g tub o fish

I have a purple, yellow, blue hippo, sailfin, and clown tang all in my 90g. I know what everyone is thinking but they all are extremely happy with zero stress, with that said I'm happy but I do have. 220g just in case I need to move someone. It's about how you introduce them to the tank and keep them well fed.

Order of introduction and also feeding does help but not always.  My poweder blue is a example.... he's fat.... VERY fat & was also added last.... but yet he still killed my sohal tang who was larger then him.  When the Sohal was smaller there were minor to no issues but as the sohal grew so did the PB's attitude.... that was in my 210g

I agree with you Gary. It's luck of the draw. So far I've been fortunate but am always ready if things go south. Well things won't go south since I'm ready lol. You know what I mean.

The tang police on reef central will even say a yellow is too big for a 90 gallon.  They act like no tang should be kept in anything less than a 180. Lol

I just ordered a Yellow and a Kohle from psp in Findlay.  Heath is the saltwater guru there and he is going to order them small.  I will add them into the DT @ the same time, hopefully they get along great!

Oh BTW the PSP here in Lima and in Findlay have a 25% off all saltwater stuff all month.  Great time to buy some fish...
