Is there such a thing as too much flow?
« on: January 16, 2013, 22:29:13 »
I just re-aquascaped my tank tonight. I had way too much rock, it was hard to clean around it, and trapped a ton of ditritus. I pulled out probably about 35 lbs worth, and now my tank looks a ton better.... but there is ditritus everywhere that I'm working on trying to clean up.

I currently have 2 Hydor Koralias but cant seem to get enough flow around the tank to keep from getting dead spots where all the ditritus ends up gathering. Basically I'm wondering if adding another powerhead or two would be a good idea, or will adding a couple more powerheads result in a whirlpool effect that is going to cause problems.

Anyone have more than two?

I have 4 plus a return pump on my 180g.  I will say it took me quite a while to get all the P Heads in the right spot to get the flow to the point where nearly no gunk would build up.

As for too much flow, if it's to the point that your irritating your coral and they won't open up, or you fish can't swim against the current, then you have too much flow.  lol

lol, I just went through this last night.  I have 1 korilla 4 and 2 korilla 3's..  I have an extra Korilla 4 for salt mixing and added it to the tank and it seemed to be too much, all the corals on that side were closing/blowing around.  I got home this morning to find a big sand hill from the extra flow.  It started to get little spots of cyno here and there thats why I want to add the extra power head.  Wierd thing is they just started to pop up but the tank has been up since august.  Needless to say im putting everything back to the way it was.

A lot of LPS like blastos and some hammers and frogspawn don't really like the extra flow.

Well I ordered a couple more Koralias today on Amazon... supposed to be delivered tomorrow. Two more might be too many, but I'm sure 1 more is definitely needed. If I can't use both, I'll just use one for salt mixing... or save if for when I convince my wife to let me finish the basement and get a huge tank.

Throw a ocean motion squirt or super squirt on your return..... Randomize the flow a bit helps out a lot and will not increase flow
300g tub o fish

I added the two new Koralias, they don't seem to be bugging anyone. Hopefully I have solved my flow problems.
