Tiny jellyfish in my sump????
« on: January 23, 2013, 19:27:31 »
Our tiny puffer fish died yesterday, so I have been all over the system making sure it wasn;t something that could have been avoided. When I noticed in my sump the tiny jellyfish. I mean tiny. I did some research & I believe them to be hydroid jelly. My question is, do I need to worry about them? I couldn't find a direct answer on the net.

They aren't an issue for fish but can irritate if they touch corals. Usually they come and go with the nutrient cycles.

They are in my fo sump. I don't understand how things like this pop up. The only things I done different in months was, put a new fish in Mon night and dump my tisbe pod explosion in the sump. Tuesday the puffer died, today I find these.

I have noticed them pop up when feeding supper small foods. Like newly hatched brine shrimp or powered foods. They seem to reduce in numbers over time and rarely will the get to the point of causing any concerning issues.

Good, thank you. They are pretty cool little things tho. It's amazing the little things that pop up in a saltwater aquarium. To bad most are pests.

I had a hydroid out break in one of my fresh water fry tanks and they killed several fry.they sting anything they touch, i'm sure larger fish wouldn't be bothered to much by them but i'm sure if they get to out of hand they could cause an issue

Not sure what is going on with this tank. Now, today our wart skin died. Ammonia is 0 trates is about 10ppm, trites is 0. We got the puffer & wart skin on the same day. And they die within a few days of ach other? Any suggestions? We have only had a total of 3 small fish in a 120 gallon system. With water changes every week. The only thing I done different was pour those pods in there. And that couldn't have hurt anything.

Did you get the fish from the same place?  Is this in your QT tank or display tank?  Leave it to YOU to find a jelly fish in your tank!  :)

Are you dumping the bucket of pods in or straining them first. I ask because they can have a tendency to have a lot of ammonia accumulate in the bucket unless the phyto is really blooming well. The ammonia can cycle up high for a couple hours before the bacteria in the tank consumes it. Certinally dumping 300-400ml in would be fine but if dumping a 1/2 gallon bucket in it could have contributed. I may be reaching here just looking for ideas that may help

I did just dump them in. It was closer to a gallon.

The puffer died the following evening. Started swimming around real fast. The day after the puffer died the angler died.

Maybe from the ammonia in the container then.

Don't do that, we will never know it is a possibility but their are other things that could have happened as well.
