filtration on fish only
« on: July 15, 2013, 10:23:03 »
What kind of filtration is needed on a fish only. I don't plan on having anything with special needs just some basic predators and a shark or to I'm looking at possibly picking up a 210 gallon tank

For a fish only tank a wet dry is hard to beat, especially the predators and other large messy fish.

I would skip the shark.... Tank is way to small.....

Protein skimmer would make life easier but isn't a necessity

I have always done fish only tanks with the wet dry filters.  Present tank is a fish only with live rock.  My only regret with using live rock is I can't put copper or other meds in the tank when or if something happens.

It might work.... Other shark people might have a better opinion.  I have always looked at it this way, a fish/shark/etc that gets to 2-3 ft long needs a tanks that's deeper then the fish/shark is long to have plenty or room to turn around with room to spare.  I am sure he would be ok for years.....

I have always preferred active fish thus I do not do reef tanks but stick with fish..... Active fish

If you want triggerfish in your tank usually they do not work with sharks/rays.....

Most triggers like to eat the eyes of small sharks and rays.  A whimpy trigger like a crosshatch, bluejaw or sargassum might work but the more aggressive ones usually do not work.  Some have had great luck with other triggers and sharks..... But the norm is it won't work.

Any idea what other fish you were thinking of?

I run, a FOWLR, with filter socks and a Protien skimmer. Works just fine. My numbers are almost identical to my reef system....

Also you can dose copper in a FOWLR, you just have to know that they LR will store and leach the copper afterwards; till you sponge it out. But the copper it's self wont hurt the rock.

Boon.. How long do you think the copper takes to leach out of the tank?
