Anyone can build stands?
« on: September 09, 2013, 17:30:12 »
Need several special sizes around 4"*2" / 6"* 3" wood stands for my aquarium. No need to be "looking good", just the flame is good enough. If anyone can build them, please let me know.
Thanks!

I own a small construction company out of kettering. I'd be happy to do it on the cheap or for a trade as I am setting up a new 40g garage sale find. 581-2732 Jake

Are these 20L or 20H? a 6ft stand is gonna come up short for 3 wide... as for your weight you will be fine, you will come in around 1100-1200# which most 6ft tanks start there in wieght and go up

Thanks for the information. They are 20H.
I built it 6'5" *25". It should be enough.
The thing I'm concerning is the 4*2 wood I bought from homedepot is not perfectly straight. And the stand is not stable at all.

Gotta pick that wood better ;) ... wanna throw up some pics of your stand/design? Even with bowed/crooked boards the stand should still have a degree of rigidity

And the stand is not stable at all.

If that stand doesn't sit right and isn't square, don't put your tank on there and fill them.  You'll most likely have a bunch of busted or leaking tanks in the very near future.

Yes, that's the problem I have. when the stand is sit by itself, its not stable. when i put some weight in each size, the stand can sit prefectly.
I'm putting 6 20gal tanks on the stand. not sure if it will be safer than putting a large tank on it?
Any farther information? Thanks!!!

if you can flex your stand by putting weight on it, I wouldn't trust it holding my tanks.  Post a pic of what you built, we should be able to guide you to the changed that may need to be made.

Here's the pic of it. I spend couple hundred already to buy wood tools everything.
If it's not gonna work...  :'(

Personally, I don't see any major issues in the picture.  It appears to me you have enough bracing and the boards look straight enough.  Just my 2 cents.  On a side note, I have not had to build stands for large aquariums, just done basic furniture.

Upper corner on Left side is not touching the ground, there is like .5-.75" distance away from the ground.
Not sure if it's ok.

Have you taken a level to it? Sure it just isn't your foundation not level? You can shim it but a .5"-.75" gap is rather large to be shimming if the floor is truly level....

As for the stand design it looks good, just make sure it is level and plumb... That right corner looks like the bracing isn't touching the upright support, same for the center support, it may just be the pic, but they look distanced, and if that is the case your weight is going to be on the screws not the support.

If you don't have them already, I would suggest a good sized square, and a 6 foot straight edge.  Those tools don't cost too much and allow you to find where the error was made, if any.  Boon could be right on in that the floor it's sitting on isn't level.  Other than that it looks like a great stand, you did everything right, good job!!!

Worst case you have to take a few pieces out and re assemble if it is truely out of square, stick with it, your really close to having a killer stand.

GOOD JOB!!!
