What's wrong with this SPS?
« on: March 14, 2012, 22:42:16 »
I tried a dip in CoralRX just to see if would help, but it continues to look worse.  I went ahead and fragged off most of the good areas tonight (First fragging experience!), but I'd like to try to save it if I can.  The white areas still show good polyp extension, there are no polyps in the dark area.

Extra large photos for your up-close examination.  Thanks!

Very hard to say, other than bleached.

but with Acros, there are a million things that can cause that.   The top two being a change in light or alkalinity.

How long have you had the frag?   Did you increase the light?   Did your alkalinity change?

Oh, it's been bleached since I got it almost a year ago...totally white...but the greenish stuff seems to be growing up the entire coral and killing off the polyps as it goes.  The white sections have healthy polyps, despite being bleached.

Well the base was just dead, algae will grow on the dead skeleton.   As for the top being bleached, some corals will not recover from the bleaching event.    Although it has survived a year in that condition, then it has a chance.   Has it had any growth since you had it?

Fragging the coral was the right thing to do.   Sometimes just cutting the coral can trigger regrowth.

Do you have other SPS in the tank?

The sections I fragged are new growth.  I have a couple other SPS in the tank, an Acro and a Monti that are both doing very well.  I plan to pick up several more at the swap, too.

I hate to say it but that coral is probably a lost cause.  If you havent been to a swap before you can pick up alot of really nice corals for good prices.  YOu can also browse fragswapper and reserve what you want ahead of time.

Came back to look at when I posted this and figured I might as well share the coral's progress while I was here.   Took this today, this coral has completely turned around...it's longest branch is around 5 inches long and it has taken on an amazing blue hue.
