Going Camping
« on: February 15, 2016, 19:53:47 »
Hey all. I'm thinking about retiring and doing some traveling in a camper trailer. Does any one have any wise words about setting up a nano tank that could take the abuse of riding in a camper. Or is it a pipe dream.

I am sure it can be done, people have competed in car audio competitions and built stereo systems around fish tanks since the early 90's.... But I think it was just goldfish

A well build aquarium should be able to hold up, I wouldn't use a off the shelf/standard nano

I would worry about humidity in the trailer

If a reef how to power lights and all the other stuff when traveling down the road

Personally, I wouldn't do it... Just visit fish stores across the country

We have a traveling reef tank that is a Fluval edge, it has a top piece of glass that covers most of the top, Im we seal the top with cling wrap while traveling but Im sure if you wanted to come up with something more permanent you could and whenever you guys pull over for the weekend just remove the sealed top. Im not saying its going to be the easiest thing to do, but it is possible, we have taken that tank all over the Cincinnati area and not had any issues, we keep the fish, rock, inverts, and coral in the tank while traveling, but our rock is attached to the bottom of the tank and all of our frags are very secure. Id love to see what you come up with if you decide to take on this task.

Thanks for the input. Probably be a few months down the road if it happens.

W/o a doubt it's possible, look at the large portable aquariums that travel around for showing off fishing stuff....

It also depends on where you plan on traveling to.  Are you going to key west, Alaska, pikes peak?  Summer, winter etc... And for that matter Koa, state parks, boondocking etc?

Can be done but depending on when you travel and where you go it might be a complete pita

You can use a boat bilge pump (saltwater safe) as a recirculation pump from the sump.

Very good point about how to power it going down the road. Lots of thing to think about.
