Lyretail Anthias (Pseudanthias squamipinnis)
« on: December 27, 2016, 02:26:05 »
I am contemplating a small school/shoal of lyretail anthias, anyone with any experience with these guys or any other anthias for that matter.

I've been looking into it myself. So far the most that I have from the info available is that they EAT EAT EAT :)

I currently have a male and female in my tank.  I have had the same issues like Lee with buying males.  I have had several males over the years and they all have died within a short period of time.  The male I have now is one that turned male after the last purchased male died.  The transgender (hope thats politically correct) fish is not near as colorful as the ocean collected male but is doing quite well.  The 2 I have in my tank now are probably going on 2 years in my tank.  I feed 2 times a day.  I have been thinking of adding one or two more.  Spoke with Lazy about them and he commented that they dont do copper qt well at all so he doesnt like to keep them.

I am thinking about setting up a 20 gal quarentine w 10 gal sump. Thinking about getting 5 to 7 females for the 180. Gerber's had a nice selection of them several weeks ago.

Getting them a little bigger seems to improve survivability, but bigger ones seem hard to get eating. Grebers might be good here as you can make sure they're eating...  and confirm what they're eating.

I would suggest getting all smaller ones.  Not tiny, but on the small (and certainly female) side.  If they are very big, one or more will have probably started the change to male.  If you have more than one male there is gonna be a rumble....

I like the lyretails because unlike most other anthias they do not require multiple daily feedings.  Once established they do quite well on once a day, and can easily make it if you skip a day.

The term is Sequential hermaphroditism... same category that clownfish fall into.
