whos had a skimmer overflow
« on: June 01, 2017, 23:12:45 »
I have had my skimmer overflow several times over the last year or so for no apparent reason.  I found a float switch that installs in the skimmer lid and will shut down the skimmer pump if it trips the switch and wont overflow the skimmer with all that collected gunk back into the tank.  Pretty simple item and was only $35 from autotopoff.com  Check it out if you have ever had any issues with you skimmer.

Mine was never any spill issue either but if I hadnt emptied my skimmer cup for several days it would dump that crap back into the tank.  I bought it to stop from dumping that goo back into my tank.

A couple of times recently, mainly after adjusting it to keep from collecting inside the throat. Thankfully still new enough that it doesn't stink too bad

The only overflow I have had on my reef octopuss is when I was working on something under the stand and I rested my forearm on the air pipe, blocking the holes Instant overflow... Do you think something might be intermittently blocking the air?

I have never been able to figure out why it overflows.  My skimmer is in my sump so it isnt that big of a deal other then dumping the skimmate back into the tank.  The level switch is my insurance against that happening again.

Good suggestion. Mine overflows when I add chemiclean, or when I use reef putty.

The same manufacturer sells them on ebay also.  I have had their ato for years and never had a single issue.
The unit plugs into the electrical outlet and the skimmer pump then plugs into it.  Drill a 3/8 hole into your skimmer collection cup and your done.  Dead nut simple and no concern of pump overflowing anymore.

My collection cup has a drain line that I run to a 5 gallon bucket. I have a float switch in the bucket, and if the bucket ever fills up, it shuts off the skimmer.
