Tank shots from this weekend
« on: September 09, 2007, 07:34:38 »
Ok, some tank shots.  I thought I would post a few inverts.  Yesterday they seemed to be out a lot.  One I didn't get is my blue linkia. He's always hiding ::)
A few of the Copperbanded Shrimp

Peeking out

Red Brittle Star

Cucumbers

These were taken with actinic lighting only.

I took these with no lighting early this morning.  I never had PE except during the night.  ::)

Can anyone confirm what this really is?

I can never get the "true" color in my pictures.  The really blue tips in this one are pretty close to what all the tips look like.  It's really a very pretty piece.

This one is much prettier in person. The ends are turning a nice pink color.

My clowns that are doing that thing they do (spawning) all the time now.  :)

Nice pictures Micki.  Join the crowd on "true" colors.  Thankfully there are digital cameras and photo editing programs.  I probably take 5-10 pictures for every one that I actually use.  A couple of the graphic artists on the reef sites say every picture needs some color balancing at the very least.  It has to do with the "blue" water and lighting.  Even then, I have a few coral that still don't show the same color in pictures that I see with my eyes.

Thanks Scott.  I couldn't agree with you more.  I have thousands of pictures taking up space on my PC. Only the fairly decent ones get sent to photobucket. ;D  I don't know anything about the photo editing programs. I would love to take a class for that sometime.

use the custom white balance settings on your camera people.  it will automatically adjust for the bluer light in your tank

Nice SPS and inverts Micki...that SPS is really taking off.  Matt's the man when it comes to taking pictures, he helped me some with my skills.  Everyone is better off getting to know the instruction manual for your camera...also the settings that lie behind the Function button on your camera.  it will make your picture go from good to great.

Thanks Travis.  I took some others yesterday without the flash and suring the day. A few of them are ok. When I get time I'll post them.

never shoot flash....go buy a $10 tripod at walmart or someplace.

most semi-new digital camera (within last 5 years) that are camera not not picture takers, those $30 crappy cameras are for teenagers and myspace, will have whitebalance adjustment.

READ THE MANUAL PEOPLE!

dont shoot flash, adjust ISO speed based on light level and subject being shot to avoid blur, dont always shoot at ISO 50 or 100, low you go better color though, and dont always shoot 800, 1600, 3200 to avoid bluring, pictures get grainy and washed out the higher you go.

the more intense your light is the easier it is to get a crisp picture dies to the lower ISO  especially under blue light were the custom white balance will not compensate enough.  I have found that under very blue and dim light the flash will help out but you need your photo editing to add some of the blue and green back.  Software that lets you sharpen this image helps out as well.  for top down shots if you have a box that lets you break the surface of the water and "dip" your camera down in can produce awesome shots.

I shot under 20k's and my white balance adjusted fine. probably depends on the camera.  never shoot with tank lights off.  you need that lighting to get colors in your corals.

if you make a dip box it helps, although I never did i would just shoot through my glass.  Always clean the glass 24 hours prior to attempting or you will disturb your occupants by adding food (algae) to the water

I always shot at 50 or 100 ISO depending on the camera I was using.  Always shoot in a dark room with just tank lights on.

The Coral to the left is a caulastrea and the coral to the right appears to be a ricordia.

Yep, some of them are the sps I bought from you.  The PB was doing awesome then I moved him to my 150 FO tank.  One of the fish (I stupidly bought from pet land instead of waiting until Joel could get it in) I added apparently had fluke and I lost several of my fish including the PB. I was sick when I lost him. He was so fat and happy and had a huge attitude!  If it weren't for that I'm sure I would still have him.  :(

Thanks Joel, I knew what the coral to the left is and I thought the one to the right was ricordia.  The weird thing is I've never had any ricordia and suddenly this thing shows up!
