need some help!
« on: June 27, 2006, 18:30:50 »
welp, as I've said in my other post, I'm getting the ball rolling finally on my big 240! BUT, ran into a problem, need some help getting it down to the basement! first off, the stand is 8 ft. long and there's an extra 2 inches on the front and side for trimming and it just won't budge to get down the stairs, next problem is the basement door is kinda blocked for the hallway. So we've come to the conclusion that we need to saw it in half, then take the stand down in 2 pieces. We figured the tank will make it, no problem. so If anyone can make some free time to help get this big tank down to the basement, this will help a great deal! Also if anyone has a table saw or saw in general to do this, it would definitely be appreciated! I can provide food and drinks, you name it!  ;D Thanks!

Is this a wood or an acrylic stand?

Are there any large windows in the basement?

solid wood stand!  ;D lol

Basement only has one entrance, and that's the hallway door, no windows, or walk-in entrances from the outside!

I know it's a crappy pic but this is all that I have on the net of the tank.  Please disreguard Bart, Colin, Baxter Jr, Kona & Momo.

There has got to be another way of getting it down there.  I thought we were pretty close when we tried...... hmmm

so did I, but I guess dad was being stubborn about it! LOL like I said, If I can get a couple of people together to help me with this, I'd really appreciate it. The trimmings held on with wood glue and I'm assuming the rest of it is...maybe!  ???

Well shoot, that blows my idea. I was going to suggest taking it apart and re assemble it once it's down stairs but that glue does not like to come apart with out damaging the wood.

Me too, I don't think cutting the stand in half is a great idea.

It's easy to remove door & door jambs and re install them to make more room.

Where there is a will there is a way.

When I moved into this house we were moving the 61" tv into the basement.  I measured the opening, planty of room...that is until you tip the tv sideways!  SHIT!  We had the tv wedged between the 4 from the bottom stair and the overhead joist.  We had to remove the bottom 3 steps with the tv still hedged and then take the tv back up 1 stair then lower it almost straight down into the hole we made.  Lets just say if we ever sell the house the TV comes with it.

You can cut the stand in half. That's what I did to get my stand down the stairs. We just screwed 2x6's inside the stand along the top seam and back seam to rebrace it. Then one 2x4 along the front seam. The stand in the pic is a little different than mine though since mine was completely open inside. I have had it that way for almost a year now.

without seeing it in person, it sounds like the stand wont come apart without a fair amount of damage.  if you cant get the stand vertical to angle it down the steps, then you will probably want to consider removing the door and jamb.  what is the width of the stand and door opening?

I LIKE JOELS IDEA WITH THE DOOR JAM COMPLETLY REMOVED U WILL GAIN 1.5 -  3.0 IN.  AND EVEN IF U NEED MORE ROOM U CAN REMOVE THE HEADER AND DRYWALL ABOVE THE DOOR AND REPLACE IT. WITH ALOT LESS TO WORRY ABOUT (DOOR FALLING OR 240 FALLING

The width of the stand is 2 ft. and 2 inches, because of the trimming on the front. The width of the door is about 2 ft. just a little less. When Gary(viggen) came over to deliver the tank and dad was trying to help, he kept saying it wouldn't go down, at least going straight in, but when Gary, tipped it up vertically, it looked like it could've made it but I don't think dad wanted to chance it, considering, he has a bad back and has torn his rotator cuff one too many times, so I think he might not of been strong enough to do that in the first place. We already said, if we end up moving out of this house later on in the future, stand goes with the house. lol I got the idea of doing the stand in 2 pieces from buckeyedad, since he said he did his and worked out fine.

it sounds like popping the door off and maybe a piece of trim off the stand may work.  all you need is to set a date for moving.

Good to see you!  Did the missing 1/8" from the saw cut matter or could you butt the two halves together and still fit the tank on the stand?

and this is also an acrylic tank so the weight won't be as tremendous as a glass tank would be filled!  ^-^

Rick: Thanks, the baby is coming along just fine. It is a boy and we have about 3 months to go.

Scott: There was about 1/4" slack initially so the width of the saw blade didn't affect it. There was just enough room to pop the tank in after the cut. I really had no choice but to cut it as I have a bi-level home. As soon as you enter you have to either go up or down. Even if I had gotten it inside the front door there was no way to turn or angle it towards the downstairs. Then there was the whole issue of the support pole in my downstairs about 3 feet offset the end of the stairs that was an adventure just to get the tank around.
