Who needs new schools? Not us!
« on: April 04, 2008, 18:24:09 »
We had some recent issues with our jr high school being condemned....ops its seems to be falling down.

seriously this was released today

At 12:00 Noon on Friday, April 4th, a team of structural engineers from two architectural firms confirmed that the Junior High School building is unsafe for occupancy. Therefore, the building will remain closed for the remainder of the school year.

Junior high students will meet for classes on Monday, April 7th, Tuesday, April 8th, and Wednesday, April 9th at the Lighthouse Christian Center as they have done this past week. On Thursday, April 10th, and for the remainder of the school year, the junior high students will attend classes at the Gettysburg building.

The content of student lockers will be gathered by school personnel and returned to students as soon as possible. Any changes regarding transportation will be announced by use of the “call system” and also sent home with students in writing.

I was talking to a guy the other day and he put it nicely.  If you were 83 years old and moldy you would be falling apart too.  I am only 48 and moldy and Im falling apart...

Add this problem to the jr high break in and damage, 3 high school break ins this year.  The closing of 2 school buildings last year and the addition of 5 trailers at another school...dang we are having a great year.

Yeah, but condemned?  Someone must not have been doing their job to let it get that far and still have kids going in and out of the building 5 days a week.

"unsafe for occupancy"...

Close enough for me.  I'd be concerned about my job if I'm Head of Maintenance and hadn't brought the problems to someone's attention prior to it getting that bad.  There are signs to look for.  Of course, maybe they did and it was ignored because of budgets.  Gotta love the way Ohio schools are funded.

we dont fix much around our schools.  my school was built in like 1912 and my last school was built in 1899 so both had asbestus...when the ceiling cracks or the walls start peeling away, how do we fix it?  screw a board over it....im not kidding.  got to love our crack maintance crew.

the high school was built on an old swamp and is sinking into the ground.  there are large cracks in the newer gym section where the building has "settled"  the gap is probably 4 inches at the top and narrows to the bottom...a little caulk and its good to go....

the stadium...which we dont own (parks) has concrete falling off it...built in 1934 i think

83 doesn't really seem that old for a masonary structure but it looks as though they just refaced the building.

Horrible...makes me more scared to have kids every day.

My old high school was built back in the 60's in South Carolina.  Well...they kinda *oops* confused the blueprints with a blueprint from a school to be built in Florida.  So, we got an open-aired campus where every classroom opened directly outside into the weather.  Great considering we were in the foothills of the Appalachians...noooo...they NEVER get snow.   ::)  It made for some long, miserable days.

They finally rebuilt the school starting back in 2002.  Come to find out...*oops*...they poured the concrete wrong or something like that...and the whole school is about to be demolished and rebuilt.  We're talking a school for a couple thousand students...not just a couple hundred.   ::)

South Carolina education at its finest.

That is where Hardin-Houston is headed if the voters don't get a clue and vote for a new building. The state is willing to pay 60%, but they still refuse to approve the levy.

I seen an update on the news, looks like you get to use a school building that has been closed for a year hopefully it doesn't fall apart.

yes they reopened gettysburg elem.  which is 15 miles outside of town and size wise we go from 85000 sq ft at the jr high to 40000 at gettysburg.

we closed that school because it costs us an extra $150,000 to bus kids there since it is so far out of town.  only like 40 kids go to schools from gettysburg
