Quiet in sump skimmer
« on: December 19, 2009, 13:42:37 »
I'm looking for a smaller in sump skimmer, something along the lines of a Octopus 110 or 150 possibly the recirculating 110. my only concern is this skimmer is going to be in the living room so i would like it as quiet as possible. I know virtually all skimmers make noise but I would like one with minimum noise.

So what suggestions can you guys give me with a relatively quiet skimmer?

the euro-reef silencer is pretty nifty in eliminating noise and bubble king and atb skimmers always seem to get great reviews. they are expensive but have proven to stay in business regardless of the price... i think there is something to be said for that. i own a couple different versions of aquac skimmers and they are very effective but are noisier because of the injector system.

what size system are you looking to purchase this skimmer for? what kind of corals and fish are you stocking and or planning to stock? this information will help us to help you find a good skimmer :P

Im thinking of setting up a 10 gallon mantis tank with a sump. I want the biggest skimmer I can fit in the sump. The sump will be relatively the same size as a 10g aquarium.

tunze 9002 is not quite as big as a 10 gallon but are great on sound and skimming. i own an aquac remora (on my sps nano and skimmin like a champ) that is louder than the tunze i saw at reefd ups, and lonnie had the remora pro and it was about twice as loud as mine.

if you would like a berlin i have a sea clone 100 that i would give ya for 20 bucks, it is used but cleaned and back in the box it came in.

I had a tunze 9002 and found it to be more finicky than I would have liked. I did really like how quiet it was. All the research i did on the 9002 it seems they're 50/50 hit or miss with a great one or finicky one.

Do you have anything you can compare the remora to in terms out loudness? Those skimmers seem to get great reviews all around for their price and performance.

I think i'll pass on the seaclone. I hear they work for some people, I just dont want to waste any money trying to find out.
