Question on halides?
« on: January 05, 2010, 17:23:35 »
Does anyone know if running halides with non tempered glass is safe as far as heat goes?

Or does anyone run regular glass under there halides and how much distance do you have?

I am trying to price a DIY halide since my last ones did so well, but I would need a glass cover or lens with fans to cool it so I dont need added cooling on teh tank. They want $36 for the glass I need if it is tempered which defeats the purpose of building it.

much thanks

I don't think it has to be tempered, it just has to be present to filter out the UV rays. I have my 150 watt DE pendent about 8 inches from the water.

It is single ended not double. So I don't need UV protection.

Ya my last tank was no glass for that reason, but I have a 75 now instead of a 180 so it will likely have a heat issue with out lids at least. I just wondered if I say kept it 4" away from  the non tempered glass  if it would melt or some crazy stuff. But I know the tempered would work ,but by the time I do that I might as well just bought a hood.

I would say get 1/8 inch non tempered glass and not the 1/16 inch that you buy at Home Depot or Lowe's. Now, the way I am reading this is that you want glass covers to go over your tank. Is that right or are you trying to put them into a frame in the reflectors to cover your halides? If I was putting them in the reflectors, then I would go with the temepered safety glass because it will take more heat before it busts. Either way, I would definitely order the glass from your local glass shop, and I would tell them to lightly seam the edges so that you don't get cut. If they try to charge you extra to do the light seam, then just use sand paper down the edges to knock the sharpness off.

Either way would be good I guess. I just don't want he heat ,but want the light. I am def not going to lowes that stuff is what I ahve now and it is paper. I might just go 1/4" and leave about 4" off the glass. Hopefully with fan it wouldn't over heat.

thanks for the advice guys
