Starting all over again
« on: December 08, 2010, 21:11:16 »
Well I had a 220g reef that I sold several months ago.
I found myself lurking around here and reefcentral and just couldn't stay away too long.
Here's a little background:
Sold my friends 75 gal set up on craigslist and saw this setup:

220g tank 72" 24" x 30" tall
Stand that is 36" tall!! (love the height)
canopy
4 x 400w mh (ballast, reflectors and 15 old bulbs)
trickle filter
300lbs dry rock
All for $700.
  ^-^ :)
Thanks and God Bless,
John

Here's some pics.
I'm going to tear down the stand(I already removed the doors) re-skin it and stain it.

Thanks and God Bless,
John

Here's the other equipment: ( by the way I am planning on a FOWLR)
2 x 36" Marineland double L.E.D. (excited about not worrying about bulb replacements!)
4 x Koralia evolution 1400 (nice special on black friday!)
Iwaki return pump
Octopus recirc protein skimmer
Sorry not sure on the details

I'll keep you updated but I am planning on taking my time!

First step water test the tank!!

Well snag number one! (of many I'm sure)
I went to water test it on Friday and it started leaking AAAGGGGHHHHH.  Well I didn't think I needed to put the bulkheads in and the plumbing.  It was only leaking under the acrylic cover out through the overflow holes.
I was relieved!
However, Saturday I put the old bulkheads in and between all the silicone and them being old there was a slow drip.

So I am on hold until I get the new bulkheads ordered.

As far as the sump goes.  I am leaning toward selling the trickle filter that came with the setup.  It's great quality but I want a sump that will require as little work as possible.  I am contemplating about setting up two tanks (30 x-high) and use that for a biological filter (macro and maybe a DSB).  I also have another 30gal that I will use for the mechanical.  The x-high I want to drill a hole in at about the 17"-20" spot and have it flow into the other 30 gal and from there return to main tank.

As always please don't hesitate to give me input (I guarantee I won't take it personally!  I'm a high school math teacher I've heard it all :).
Thanks and God Bless,
John

Well..... >:(
Delay after delay,
couple of weeks ago tried to do a water test (me and seller had a gentlemans agreement on it holding water).  But dumb me didn't put the bulkheads in so it started leaking under acrylic overflows!
So after freaking out I realized I just needed to plumb the bulkheads temporarily!
Did that but the old ones leaked!
So I bought 8 bulkheads and glass hole bit to drill sump etc.
After numerous attempts it worked and no leaks around the bulkheads... :party0040:
Now we are cruising.
Well I was sitting around tonight and decided "Let's fill up about 20 gallons into the tank!"
After about a half hour the right front corner was damp.

OH did I mention that it was on the outside of the tank!!!!!!!!

Well I guess we'll see what type of gentlemans agreement holds up!
Thanks and God Bless,
John
