Looking for Sump
« on: June 21, 2010, 14:57:40 »
Hey everyone,

I'm looking to put a better sump on my tank.  I have a small setup I got a while ago running now, but there is just no room with my skimmer and return pump in there. I have 41.5" long x 15.5" deep, and 27.5" height.  Really though I need something that is less than 27.5" high so that I can actually access the sump.

Anyone out there have any tanks or old sumps that would work for that size requirement?  If I'm not able to find anything, I guess I will have to get some more acrylic and make one.

Thanks,

Wes

I use 38 gal tanks for my setup.  I do have a spare.  I use external pumps, so it is drilled in one of the short sides for return pump.   This was my old sump, but I did remove all of the baffles that I had it in.

Check out my tank profile.  I have pictures of my current sump, but the return pump is drilled exactly the same way.  http://www.ohioreef.com/index.php?topic=5785.0

Bummer on it being drilled.  I am currently using a Mag5 for my return.  I don't have any external pumps laying around either.  Baffles wouldn't be a bother as I can just put them back in.

I thought so, but I couldn't remember if the MAG line were an internal/external.  Thanks for the reminder!

If I can do that... then what would you want for that spare tank?  Do you happen to still have the baffles or did you reuse them for something else?

Not sure I would put a mag external, but they say you can.   I can leave the bulkhead in the hole, then you can just put a pvc plug in the bulkhead.

$20

And I don't have the baffles anymore, it had an internal fuge built into the sump.  I would not do it that way again, too hard to clean.  I do have the skimmer stand that I built for the skimmer to sit on in the sump.   The tank will need cleaned with vinegar and  some silicon scrapped where the baffles used to me.

Sounds good to me.  Where can I meet you to get the tank from you?  If you could leave the bulk head in there that would be cool.

I live in Springfield, but I am working in Downtown Dayton all this week.

Hey, if you will be at the meeting this Sunday then I can get the tank from you then.  If that works, can you let me know what size pieces of acrylic or glass I should pick up so that I can have all that ready for when I get the tank?

Thanks again!

I'll send you a PM to arrange a pickup

The tank is 11.75" inside width, you'll need to leave some room on the edge for silicone.  But the height of each piece needs to be planned.

What kind of skimmer are you running, how deep does it sit in the water?   Are you going to build a small fuge into the system?  bubble trap design.

I am running a Coralife Super Skimmer 220.  After looking at your setup, I was thinking about setting it up to the same general setup.  Just setup for the equipment I have.  So I will just get the acrylic after I have the tank and place everything in it and map it out that way.

Thanks!

Yeah, I have the 220 or whatever it is... the biggest one at the time I could get, on my 75.  I have it draining to a bottle off of a water tank like at an office... and it fills that thing like it is nothing! I love the thing!
