New question - stench?
« on: September 11, 2010, 23:25:15 »
:o Here we go...  I picked up a rock out of my tank covered with zoas for a freshwater dip (gorilla crab issue) and it stinks.  I mean raw baby diaper, gutted-possum-by-the-side-of-the-road-in-the-August-sun, "sweet smell of dead low tide" ripe stink.

What's this generally a sign of?  According to everthing I know, this rock should be cleaned and cured just coz of the smell alone.  Also, my system chemistry has went completely haywire since I put this rock in the tank.

Advice?

Kev

I would be looking in any holes for a dead fish.  Even if your not missing one, where ever it came from might.

Dude, leave it alone lol. Quit messing with it. Like Lonnie said, look for dead fish. If your not missing any, leave it alone.

Did it smell like sulfur? If so, great! Thats the bacteria working.

What does it taste like?
75G Mixed Reef w/ 30G sump/refuge

Electrical Engineers do it on impulse, with faster rise times, with more power, and less resistance at higher frequencies, without shorts, until it Hertz

It sounds like you have die off from the rock. Either something has gotten in the rock and died or all the bacteria has died off. I would keep an eye on an ammonia spike. If you start to see it go up I would pull the rock out.

The rock is out.  In the garbage.  This is the rock that I just put up for trade.  I wouldn't have given this to anyone after smelling it.  Also, the same stench was in my fuge but is gone now following a thorough cleaning and water change.  I had the "red crap in the fuge", but it got a thousand times worse after getting this rock.  You know, every item I bought with that rock smelled like that even though from different tanks at the LFS.   Wondered what that was.  As I said, my chemistry went haywire after putting this rock in as well.

So everything you purchased has a foul smell after taking it home, and this single rock made your chemistry go crazy?

I dunno.  Seems everything went south rapidly after that.  Nobody's fault, just a learning experience.  I know the smell was there.
