Coral Identification
« on: July 09, 2012, 20:37:20 »
I bought this from someone at the Ohio Reef frag swap in 2011. I was hoping someone would recognize it's trade name. It is different from the tyree war coral in that it has sections of Purple. Any ideas?

Someone told me this is Favites pentagona. Common name war coral. Google search shows match :)

Yup, Favites pentagona. Before 2006 when there weren't any shipments coming from Australia, Tyree's and JenDub's morphs were basically the only two around and both were lineaged as Tyree War Coral or JenDub's Big Mouth War Coral. Once Australia opened up, Acan lords mostly stopped being priced like chalices are now, and wild red Favites pentagona colonies flooded the market. The name War Coral stuck for any green mouthed red pentagona.

Tyree's War Coral often developed grey streaking, and most newer collections do as well. Yours looks to have purple streaking and I'm not sure if that's from a particular colony or from your tank conditions and lighting.
