Lazys Clownfish Breeding Adventure
« on: March 08, 2021, 22:30:24 »
My clownfish have been laying eggs and I decided to try rearing some. It was kind of on a whim. Briw2005 was on his way to pickup the eggs from me so I thought why not give it a try so I kept a small portion. Ricardo came by on Saturday and brought rotifers. He also gave me the run down on how to breed them and a lot of great tips and tricks. After the lesson I went to petsmart and picked up a 5g tank and airstone. It has a lid and a small dim light so it was perfect. I painted the sides black like Ricardo advised, added tank water, heater, air and rotifers. Today 2/8 the clowns hatched. Probably have 15 or 20 of them. Here is a video of one hunting rotifers. I was surprised how well they swim for being just born today. If you watch close youíll see it eat 3 of them.

The independence of baby animals and sea life is remarkable. Thanks for filming.

My rotifer culture crashed. I hope there is enough in tank to sustain the clowns until they get large enough to eat baby brine shrimp. I think it is when 5 days old? Tomorrow they are 3 days old.

They seem to be doing good. The baby brine shrimp are still to large for them but they are eating powder food. They are 6 days old and have almost doubled in size. Here is a video I took a couple hours ago. I think they will go through metamorphosis soon.

I have a bunch of 5 and 10 gallon tanks I used to use for a rearing system.  There are 3 x 10s with a drilled side (I put them sideways on a shelf so it was the back), 3 x 5s also drilled and 2 x 10s not drilled and 1 x 5 not drilled.  If you want them just come pick them up.  I had them on a homemade wooden shelf system and used the I drilled tanks for the larvae and when they were big enough transferred them to the drilled tanks plumbed to a sump.  Only one hole drilled, the return flowed over the top.

With them laying eggs every 2 weeks you will have a bunch soon!

Thanks for the offer frogfish. Sounds like a nice setup. Maybe someone on here will have interest. I just did the one batch for fun. It was enough for me.

They are a month old now. Looks just like clownfish but tiny. Going to do it one more time I think. One thing I learned is they are incredible easy to kill. They seem to die from being startled really easily. I have killed them so many different ways. Next hatch is going to be Thursday or Friday night. I have two other clownfish pairs that havenít laid but showing signs and wouldnít be surprised if they do in another few months. Black gladiators and the other pair is black storms.

These are from the 2nd clutch born on 3/23. They are 18 days old. The one in front has completed metamorphosis while the others are behind by a couple days. Most clownfish complete meta in 14-18 days but can be as long as 21 days.

Looks like it is going to be a Wyoming White

They were up close to the front of the tank so caught a good video. That is top of a water bottle for size
