Another problem with the SCWD is that it is not servicable. I had one that got  a small snail or limpit lodged in it. It would no longer do it's switching back and forth. I tried and tried to get it "un-stuck" and never did. I finially split it open at it's seam to learn what had gone wrong, found the piece of shell in it that had the barrel stuck. I was to scared to re-glue it back together and try to use it. It did cut down flow for me as well.

I've been using a tsunami wave maker with aquarium systems power heads for a few years now. I'm pretty happy with how that combination has done.

Micki...

This one is prob my fav from what I've seen advertised:

http://www.oceansmotions.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=32&osCsid=32ee8fa23b44f63b101440f545de8653

I know that keeping the mechanical devices out of the tank is the goal.  I don't like the PH's in my tank and plan to remove them someday.  I would think that you might be able to hide a device like this one in your hood so that you'd only see the actual outputs in the tank.

I would skip the sqwd & get a OM instead

the sqwd's as you know cause a LOT of backpressure.  They are also knows to become noisy over time.

The OM products do cost more but are silent & cause minimal headloss

I use one on my reef, excellent product
300g tub o fish
