SCWD
« on: July 08, 2006, 13:14:53 »
Does anyone have one?  If so how do you like it?
the Dr.'s have them on sale right now.  :)  We talked about getting one a while back but wasn't sure how it would do for our tank.

Micki,

I have one.  It's OK, at best, but maybe, I don't have enough pump to run it right.  It's a nice addition but it really cuts my flow.

Just my .02,

Mitch

Thanks Mitch, I wondered about that.  How much did it cut the flow down?  A lot, little?

I've not measured it, but it's considerable.  I seem to recall reading a post a while back that stated that the SCWD could cut flow by as much as 40%.  Of course, I did not read this till after I'd purchased mine.  :(

The price is right on them, but, IMO, the money might be better spent on a diff style of wavemaker.

Thanks for that information.  I really wondered about that.  I don't like anything in the tank in the way of mechanics.  I have to depend on my external pump that is in the basement to do all the work.  It does fine right now, but I thought maybe some differnt motion would be good.  I may rethink that now.

Thanks again for the info.

I don't like the PH's that are in my tank right now but I'm not sure yet, how to remove/replace them and keep enough flow.  I hoped that I could use the SCWD to alternate flow from my return pump and make do, but I don't get enough flow from my pump now to remove the PH's.  I'm leaning towards adding a closed loop to take care of the flow issues, but that is also more hardware.  *sigh*  What to do, what to do.

For me, the power is in the external return pump.  We have a closed loop system and it works good.  If I really wanted to, I could go with a bigger external pump and then add the SCWD, but that's more $$  than I care to drop right now.

Why not add the SCWD to your closed loop pump then?

Because my tank is on the main floor of my house.  The sump/fuge and rest of the system is in the basement.

This might explain it better...

I know who I'm calling for plumbing help when I get a house with a basement for my in-wall setup.  :)

What about your canopy Micki? Is there anyway you could suspend an additional closed loop system in there. Maybe a SCWD, mag pump, and plumbing. You would be able to add the intake pipe for the pump in one of your corner overflows. The only visible peices would would be the two exhaust pipes maybe placed in the front corners of your tank. Just an idea, I don't know if you have the additional room. Just a thought.

micki your return is to big for a squid i would think.  like stated above it would be secondary flow (or a closed loop would work also)

Hey Micki,
Do you have a closed loop system as well as the basement sump system?  If so, I didn't realize it.  Where is the second pump located?  Under your tank?

i dont think she has second but would need it because her pump is huge and would make a SQWD go boom

Yeah, I know she has a Blueline 70 or 100 for the sump return.  Don't know what the head pressure is coming up from the basement.  If it was split up into 3 or 4 returns off of a manifold it would give 300-500 gal/hr/per head without head pressure.  I don't think that is how it is set up though.  What's it take to run a SCWD?

No you guys are correct. I only have one system in the basement.  See I shouldn't even be trying to answer these kinds of questions.  :D  If Randy would have been home I would have asked him to answer it!  :)

Thanks for those links.   Really, I've not considered anything other than the SCWD.  I'm happy with the flow I have, I just thought a little more movement might be nice, but I didn't want anything mechanical in the tank.  Down the road I may consider something like one of the links you provided.

Thanks!  :)
