Imaging a DIY project invovling a bicycle crank, some chain, gears, and a bike hook...  exercise and happy fish!  What could go wrong? :)

In case of a fish emergency keep in mind I am close by as well, across from the High school.

Thanks! I will DEFINITELY keep that in mind. One of the first things on the list of things to buy when I'm employed is a smallish generator (on a sidenote... informal interview on Tuesday, everyone cross your fingers that it isn't CANCELED BECAUSE OF SNOW!  :banghead)

Wow, sorry to hear about this guys!  Glad to hear everything sounds ok now.

After going through Ike with 9 days without power...here are a few simple tips.  Keep around the house some styrofoam cut to enclose your tank.  In the event of a power outage, you can just tape the styrofoam around the tank to help keep the heat in.  Oxygenation is more important than temperature in the case of a power outage, so if you're on a budget, the battery operated airstones can be a life-saver.  In a pinch, we used a cordless drill with one of the bike rack hooks in it...which made an awesome stirrer for the tank.  LOL.

I was definitely resorting to a manual egg beater until I dug out an air pump. Maybe emergency protocol would be a good sticky post somewhere, I didn't even know batter powered airstones existed!

UPDATE! My iPhone lost battery power after the last update but I managed to dig out my power inverter and hook it to our old truck (figured it had the biggest engine so it would charge the most battery)... I slept in 45 minute intervals to check everything and run the truck a bit. Power hit on about 4:45am (I know because my wife accidentally left the light switch on and it FLOODED the room with light... what a wake up call!). No casualties! You all rock for throwing me advice in the middle of the night!

I live in that neighborhood! Whereabouts are you? We're on the end of Whittington by S. Village! I'd say we could turn to each other in an emergency except that judging by last night we'd probably be suffering the same problem at any given moment  :D

I'm on South Village - 141.
