Xenia
« on: September 29, 2011, 01:05:38 »
Went to the local pet store to see some new fish they got in... and I came home with some xenia...  they were taking over some of the tanks and they gave me a small bunch for $8 and a few snails for free...  I placed them on top and with pretty good water flow...  so hopefully they do well..

I did acclimate it..  I let the bag float for about 30 mins.. then put them into a bucket and let water from my tank drip into the bucket until the bucket was full..

Your first coral :) Congratulations. Consider putting it in low flow. Medium flow won't hurt them but they don't seem to like it and deflate if too much.

They can take pretty much any amount of light. I have had them from 400w MH to 150w and did fine. It is hard to tell from the picture but it kind of looks like blue anthelia apposed to Xenia. If it is anthelia medium flow would be good. Try google it to see what it is.

We will be able to tell once it acclimates to the tank and you can get another shot of it. Perhaps tomorrow it will expand after a nights rest. Either way you got a good deal and it looks like a nice piece.

Hopefully it will open up tomorrow.  A lot of the coral at the pet store here were really small or already attached to a big piece of LR..

What is a good way to get coral attached to the LR?  I had to wedge it to get it to stay...  because the rock it was on wasn't heavy enough...

Most use a thick gel super glue. Wedging in rock works well to.

I believe its fully opened now =)  The flow is way to much for it so I have to get rid of one of my koralia and get a smaller one and move my hob filter to the opposite side.  EDIT:  I shut everything off on the side and it still moves around quite a bit...  so scratch what i was going to try..  I think they should be fine..  as long as they stay wedged into place..

Does my xenia look funny?  Its the only thing in my tank that isn't doing well..  My kenya trees are spreading like crazy and so are my waving hand anthelia.

They sit right under a 150w halide and the 2 actinics..

My Xenia looks a lot better today.  I haven't done anything different though besides I started using chemi-pure and I haven't done a water change since I've had the xenia.  Not to mention all my other corals look great!  So what was I doing wrong?  or maybe its because my new halides they're doing better?

I don't know if ya can tell but the stalk is taller than what it was before.

Could it be the tap water I'm using?  Can I buy gallons of water from Kroger or Walmart?

Is the other Xenia attached to it bugging it by chance?  Its been attached to the frag the entire time.

Do you use straight tap water?  I think I read that you treat with chemipure?

If possible try and go to RO/DI or at least RO.  The buildup of Dissolved solids due to evaporation may eventually begin to give you issues.

Is the tap water well or city?
