Anyone fly RC Heli's/ or RC's In General?
« on: December 14, 2011, 00:06:33 »
I thought I read that some people on here fly some heli's not sure though...

If so I am looking for reccomendations... I picked up a micro the other day and have modded it about as much as one can, it flies great and I really enjoy it, looking to go much larger now though and take the game outside.

Any suggestions on heli's?

Mike does. I am getting two for Christmas for my boys. This is what Mike recommended for indoor noobs.

Yep the one Brian is a great entry level hobby grade micro. Its nice to spend the extra money on one from a hobby shop because they stock all the replacement parts. Ths is the one I am trying to learn on lol

I picked up a Syma s107g Micro... I looked at the same blade you have mike, and I liked it, but I liked the way the syma flew better. And it felt much sturdier as it is a full metal frame. And since I never flew before I opted for the syma as it was on average $50-90 cheaper than the blade.

http://www.amazon.com/Syma-S107-S107G-Helicopter-Colors/dp/8499000606

I took the hardwired battery out of the syma and put in a jst connector so that I can run the very same batts that the blade copters you have run, I also added a more aggressive rear rotor for quicker forward and reverse response. I have also shaved about every bit of weight off of it that I can. and Repostioned the Center of gravity further towards the nose to give it a better angle for forward speed.

It flies like a dream and I love it... The only draw back is the Infared 3ch... but I felt that a 2.4ghz controller for indoor flight is not needed, and have had no problem with the infared, even flew it outside the other day with no problems. I love it soo much I want to get a larger scale copter now, was wondering if anyone has any experience with any of the larger scale copters and what controllers are best etc.

We had to go up to the hobby shop the other day, I hadn't took a step in that store since like 06, it was a big mistake I want soo much stuff now lol. I was impressed with their new store layout.

BTW Ebay has 5-6 pack of the eflite 3.7 120mah lipo's for around 14 bucks after shipping... Best price I have found thus far... I ordered 2 orders worth, They are geniune. Might want to check it out.

makes em less than $3 bucks per batt.... and the shipper is located in USA I think VA, so you get them in like 2 days.

I have also been thinking of snagging one to go along with a RC swimmer I am picking up.  A relative of mine owns a hobby shop in Beavercreek called "Military Toy Shop".  If interested I can ask him if he can give a Ohio Reef discount? We had my families christmas party this past sunday and talked RC stuff for a bit.  He ordered a handful of the RC swimmers & when I saw it... I had to have one.  Then we talked about RC Helicopters which is something I have always wanted.......

& wow... thats some crazy copter skills!!

Yeah Viggen, I would be interested in seeing what he can do.. I am all for supporting the local shops,But I must say most of them I can't reason to swing their prices... The hobby shop used to only price 15-20% above what you'd find on the internet or even match some prices... When I walked in there the other day most of the stuff I was looking at was 2-3x the mark up of what I could get on the internet.. makes it hard to put my money into them with prices inflated like that...

I got 5 of exact batteries they had for sale for the price of what they wanted for 1.

Eflite 3.7v 120mah 12c lipo they wanted 10.99 per battery...

I got 5 brand new for 14.99 after shipping.

The replacement rotors they had were 10.99 per set.

I got 8 new sets for 6.99 after shipping...

They wanted 19.99 for a single slot micro lipo charger.
I got a 4 slot micro lipo charger with ac adapter for 22.99 after shipping. (the one slots were 4.99 after shipping, but I wanted the 4 slot)

I love the look of their store, but those prices just drive me away... I used to eat the difference with my Nitro truck parts, but again that was when they only wanted 10-15% more than an internet price. I can't swing 200-300%

But getting back to the topic, I did check out his site, Let me know what he comes up with... I can't see that video right now mav, but I can't wait to

I have 2 nitros that I fly.  I am actually have one of them on my work table (wife's kitchen table) rebuilding it after a serious crash this past summer.  The selection process all depends on what you want and what you want to do with it.  I purchased a 600 size nitro in near new shape for $650 with no radio.  It is a nice heli but you can pick up one cheaper for a cheaper model.

I got this Heli from Brookstone.  Has flashing lights (can turn off and on) as well as comes with extra parts and you can buy a 2 yr warranty for like 15 bucks if I remember right.  The heli is like $60 bucks

Yeah that Looks pretty much like the syma I have amstar.

As for helis, I like the aspect of nitro, but I dont trust my hand enough to invest in one only to wrap it around a tree or something(i always do) I was thinking of doing one of the larger electric models until I am more skilled....

My neighbor at my old house used to do professional photography and he went out and bought a huge nitro heli to mount his camera to, to take aerial pics... This thing was massive, it sounded like a real chopper when he was flying it around our houses. I am not sure what it was but I know it musta been super expensive, by far the largest rc heli I have ever seen. and the height that thing could achieve was incredible

I mostly want something easy to fly and controlable, but able to do some more riskier "tricks" and flight, but also not cost alot to fix and repair when I decide to have an Evil Knievil moment...

I want to run it outside so it needs to be stable enough to handle outdoor winds/conditions... The faster it can go the better too, I love my micro, but that was the one of the first things I changed after doing the battery mod was getting more speed i love zipping around and driving my dogs insane ;)

Oh no it wasn't his shop at all Gary.

It was "The Hobby Shop" in Miamisburg by the dayton mall... They have expanded their building into the storefront beside them and I think that is why their prices have inflated soo much... I personally would have rather seen the smaller store and better prices if that be the case though.

http://thehobbyshoponline.com/

20% off is nice! I will need to go up there and check out his shop, I saw a few things on his site that interested me. Thanks for checking Gary

Also... FWIW.... I asked him if it was 20% off internet prices & he stated the internet prices are not current.

Best bet is to stop by his shop or possibly call if that's better

I haven't been into "the hobby shop" for a while, I thought that was where you were referring to but wanted to be sure :)

The absolute best advise for getting into a nitro heli is to get a simulator.  It will shorten the learning curve greatly and will pay for itself it parts alone from saved crashes.  (you will crash, no way around it)  I frequent a web site called runryder.com  It is exclusive heli and you should be able to watch the classifieds and pick up a pretty good flight simulator for around $100.  Sounds like alot but one crash can cost that much if it is bad enough.  I use realflight g4.0 It is an older version but is supported fully by win7.0 and you can do pretty much anything on it.  I have been trying to learn to fly 3d like what is in blown76mav's video with the program.  I am somewhat good on the simulator but my knees knock too much when I get the real thing out ;D

You have a nitro truck pete?

I have been into rc cars for about the last 15 years. I have always had them.. I sold abunch of them about 3 years ago, I still have my basher(Custom hpi savage) but havent used it in about 2 years. When I went back into the store the other day I got the itch back again real bad.

I just never got into helis... I had a plane once... played with it for 20 mins and spent the next 4 hours getting it out of a tree... after that I decided cars don't go in trees so I will stick with them.
