Yea but stepping up to a dart pump would require taking apart most of his stand. Taking a chance on destroying all the oak trim in the process. There is no way to drill a bigger hole in the sump unless its removed.

Thought a high head pump was needed not low head like a dart?

He needs more flow, problem is his frag tank as about 6' off the ground. Most smaller pumps ( pan world, Iwaki) loose a lot of flow by the time they get that high. A dart would give a good amount of flow at that height at a much better wattage however, he only has a 1" bulkhead installed. So going with a larger flow pump like a blue line 70 he will get the flow he needs to the frag tank as well as feed the main tank and the calcium reactor.

so why not just add more flow with powerheads to the frag tank instead of a whole new pump to create more water flow?

or just looing for more flow for the entire setup

I think part of the problem is need to circulate more of the "clean" sump water through the frag tank. He has 4 powerheads now but I don't think he is getting enough fresh water from the sump up there. The frag tank was having hair algae issues where the main tank is not.

what about a HOB filter? or a hang on the back refugium?  it would be cheaper then a whole new pump?  or even a mag pump to push water up there.....

or lowering/plumbing the frag tank differently.  just seems like alot of money to spend on a pump just for a frag tank

what would be causing the hair algae? could it be the age of the bulbs over the frag tank?

I can send the guy on RC a PM and get his email addy if you are interested.... pumps looks in typical used iwaki condition.... slight signs of rust in a few places.... but it looks like he's motivated to sell

How much flow are you getting now?  Could lights be the culprit & not the flow??  On my 475g I have 3 250w MH's all used luminarc II reflectors & the same ballasts.  One end of my tank I have hair algae.... the other there isn't any.  I also have a mismatch of MH bulbs.... which reminds me.... I need to order some

I am not a big fan of those power hungry pumps.... since they are noisy & suck a LOT of juice.  Installed numerous 55/70's on large tanks hooked up to several ocean clear canister filters in a CL setup but obviously in the correct situation they are a necessity......

Any chance of running a additional internal pump  vs running a high head larger one?  My BB7000 is v-quiet/silent & uses I think 80w & does 1200 ish gph if I recall at 6ft head.

To lower the frag tank would mean rebuilding he entire stand as well. Bulbs are new. To buy a mag pump will add about the same amount of watts if you combine his existing pump to it.

I forget where I saw it but Blueline's HD70 was $249 & the HD100 was $319 vs $335 for the Iwaki 70 & $419 for the Iwaki 100
