Ohioreef's 75g Reef Tank - A Fresh Start
« on: March 13, 2013, 19:31:46 »
I have seriously neglected my tank over the last couple years. I had a spawning event which wiped out almost everything in my tank. I seriously considered tearing it down, but just couldn't bring myself to do it. I also didn't have the ambition to give it the attention it needed.

I was sitting in the living room looking at the tank the other night and realized how much I missed my old tank so I decided to finally do something about it! I started perusing the forums again and I've already procured 2 Koralia powerheads for $20. My tank was down to just one and I knew I needed at least 1 more. I got the 2 on the understanding one of them didn't work, but when I got it home it fired right up so I made out quite well!

I'm still needing a new skimmer pump (been skimmerless for over a year and it shows!), new bulbs (all bulbs 3-4 years old), new refuge light, some chaeto, and a clean up crew (hopefully I win the reef cleaners ugliest tank contest to fix this one!).

Here are a few pics I took the other night:

I cleaned the glass and put in the new Koralias. My third one is soaking in vinegar and I'm thinking of putting it in also.

Here's a couple "better" pics:

So proud of my anemone and clownfish! They survived the crash, although I lost one of my clowns in the last week. Not sure what happened to it.

Went down to Gerber's today and picked up a sea hare and some chaeto.

Hopefully the sea hare does as good for me this time as the one did for me when I first set up my tank.

Should have a skimmer pump coming in the next couple of days.

I'll get there!!!

The mushrooms look like they are wearing camouflage.  Don't feel bad I haven't done much with my 90 gallon reef in three years.  My aquarium doesn't have that much algae but there are thousands of aiptasia on the rock.  I have someone picking my tank and equipment Sunday.  I'm planning on setting up a 27 gallon Marineland Cube I found on Craigslist.  I'm excited to get back in the hobby but I lost my pants on the sale of my 90 gallon reef.  I'm going to try to make my new setup a little more user friendly.

I debated selling mine a couple times but I knew I'd lose my butt selling it! That's what kept me from selling it and I'm glad I didn't sell.

It sure is! The sea hare was off to a good start, but he's disappeared. I'm hoping he's just hiding. I'm pretty sure my last one hid during the day.

Got my new skimmer pump today so I've finally got a skimmer back on my tank. It's been skimmerless for at least a year.

Had to get a new impeller for my return pump. Cleaned the pump the other day and the impeller was swollen and cracked, still working though. Received the new one today. Kudos to AquaEuro pumps, I emailed them about a replacement as I couldn't find one online anywhere. They sent me a reply saying they carried them. I ordered one 2 days ago and it arrived today from California! Pretty good customer service if you ask me.

Here's some pics of the frags I picked up at the frag swap yesterday. I've labeled the ones I know what they are. If you know what the ones I don't know are please let me know!

The picture quality sucks, I'm out of practice photographing my tank.

Frogspawn:

Candy Cane

Cactus

Green Cup

Blue Snow Flake

Pink Star Polyps

Monti Cap from Travis

I also picked up 20 of aquavista99's Hawaiian snails.

Did some more work on the tank today.

I started out doing a simple water change and decided to clean out my refuge. I ended up completely draining it and vacuuming out all the nasty stuff on the bottom. I had put some LR pieces down there and kinda forgot about them. When I pulled them out today and cleaned them off I discovered they were well covered with some very nice coraline! Thinking about using them to mount frags and put them in my main tank.

Here are some pics of my sump:

Must have stirred something up, I've never seen my skimmer foam so much!

My cleaned up refuge:

Tested my water today and everything looks good except my phosphates. They have always read 0 and today they are reading 5. Not sure if I stirred something up when I cleaned out the refuge or if my pruning out alagae has allowed them to rise. Hopefully my chaeto will appreciate it and take care of the problem!

Here's some updated pics. My sea hare has been doing a bang up job! I've noticed the algae is changing colors and appears to be dying off! My PO4 has also  dropped to 2. Starting to look like things are turning around!

Things are coming along great!! Tested the water today and my PO4 is down to 1 and my Ca has dropped to 540. Almost all the algae is gone so I'm gonna have to find a new home for my sea hare before too long.

I will take it. Just let me know how much & when & where to pick it up.
