Need some Sand
« on: February 13, 2014, 21:56:48 »
We have about 60lbs of sand+crushed coral in our 75gal currently and want a thicker sandbase to allow for more bacteria growth.  Anyone have any sand they want to part with?  Or know where the best/cheapest place to get sand is?

How deep is the sand in your tank?  If not properly kept clean, sand has a risk to do more harm than good.   Unless you are going to try a deep sand bed  (at least 4" deep)   Only put enough sand for the aesthetics that you are looking for, and keep it clean.

Live rock will have more than enough surface area for bacteria.

It is currently an inch or two thick, basically just enough to cover the black rim of the tank.  So you think we should leave it?

I would. And I would get something that stirs the sand. I have a conch. I need another. But he's very active. That helps keep the sand clean.

I would leave it.  And do get some sand dwelling creatures

Conchs
Nassarius Snails
Sand Sifting Starfish.

I would also use gravel vacuum every so often to keep it clean.

We are leaving the sand be shallow, thanks to all who posted, but based on the replies, we feel that the shallow bed will be best in our tank.
