Reef savvy overflow
« on: October 27, 2015, 22:32:34 »
Has anyone had a chance to use one of these yet?  I am thinking about picking one up for a new tank build.  I think they would be a better solution that a traditional drilled tank.  Thoughts?

I havent but a good friend if mine just built one on a custom build. So far he really likes it. It really fits well in the tank and it takes almost no room inside. Works like a bean animal. It did take a little dialing in to get it perfectly quiet.

Actually there are two similar products, I posted the Synergy Reef product but called it the Reef Savvy one.  The Synergy product is $50 cheaper, so I am likely to go with that.  I have a friend (lives out of state) who recently purchased one and likes it quite a bit, I was hoping maybe someone else here had some first-hand experience with one of these as well.

Here is the Reef Savvy product:  http://reefsavvy.com/the-reef-savvy-difference/  This one is $250.

Definitely opens up the tank design, but you'll need to be comfortable drilling your tank.

The only other design consideration is how you plan to do your return pipe.  A conventional overflow/reef ready tank has a hole for your return pipe inside the foot print of the tank.

Let me jump in with my 2 cents. My Bean Animal on my 125 is very unobtrusive as far as taking up tank space, was super easy, perfectly quiet and never needs tweaking. All 1" bulkheads easily handle the flow rate of my Mag950 return pump. Right is full siphon, left is the durso and the center is a catastrophic backup and has never seen any flow because durso starts full siphon in like 2 second during startup because of how I placed the vent tube. I spent less that $10 for the 4 pieces of smoked glass.

Great feedback guys.

Just some thoughts, looking at the design of these, they are very unobtrusive inside the tank.  They also have a very large surface area from which to skim film from the top of the water.

Well, I pulled the trigger, ordered one of these last night, it is supposed to arrive on Friday.  Very much looking forward to this project.  I also ordered a Waveline DC return pump, anyone have any experience with these?

My plans have changed.  I am going to sell this overflow, I figured I would offer it out here first.  This has never been used.  I will part with it for $190, I will throw in two glass bits as well.

Let me know if you are interested, I am located in Centerville.

I have added this to the For Sale section of this site.
