I know they are more reasonalby priced if you could buy the led and star seperate and do the reflow solder yourself....anyone have access to one??

They are still about $5 a pop.

Anyone with a heat gun can reflow solder ;)

compared to $7, $5 is a big savings!

Does a blow dryer work??

20 LEDs*$5 might be enough for a 30 Breeder  ;)

Not for a tank your size  i think anything over a 30breeder the cost is a pretty big turnoff.

Who said DIY had to be cheap :)  sometimes it's about making something you cannot buy.    I want to upgrade to a 6' tank, rather than adding another MH, I might put some smaller LED strips on the ends.  Keep the light a little lower on the ends, and also do sunrise/sunset

The important thing to remember about LED's is the money you save long term. a 2x250W MH setup can run you alot of money over the course of a year

$100 in bulbs

With a 8hr photo period

500 X 8hr a day X 30 Days a month X 12 months a year = about $144 in electric

Thats $2440 over the projected lifetime of a LED setup...

Only that that would be over a grand for LEDs to replace 2x250MH  :)

Of course, that 2440 didn't include the cost of the fixture itself...

That's one of the funniest things I've heard all day!!  Never thought I'd hear "government employee" and "rich" in the same sentence!!
